Why is unemployment so high in 2024 - NYS Department of Labor claim taking forever

Been waiting 6 weeks for my NYS Department of Labor claim to get approved and I'm starting to wonder if this is normal for 2024? My neighbor said unemployment rates are really high right now and that's why everything is taking so long. I got laid off from my retail job in December and filed right away but my claim is still in adjudication. Is anyone else experiencing these crazy delays? I've tried calling NYS Department of Labor but can never get through. Starting to panic about rent money.

The delays aren't necessarily because unemployment rates are high - NYS Department of Labor adjudication can take 4-8 weeks regardless of economic conditions. Your claim is probably stuck because they need to verify your separation reason with your employer. Have you checked your my.ny.gov account for any pending issues that need documentation?

I checked and there's nothing showing that I need to submit. Just says 'adjudication in progress' with no other details. This is so frustrating.

While unemployment rates can affect processing times due to volume, 6 weeks is within normal range for complex adjudications. NYS Department of Labor has to verify employment history, wages, and separation circumstances. If you were laid off due to lack of work, make sure your employer responds to their fact-finding inquiry quickly. You can also file weekly claims while waiting - if approved, you'll get backpay from your claim date.

Wait, I should still be filing weekly claims even though my initial claim isn't approved yet? NYS Department of Labor never told me that!

Yes, absolutely continue filing weekly claims. It's required to maintain your benefit year and you'll receive retroactive payments once approved.

I had the same issue last month with getting through to NYS Department of Labor on the phone. Kept getting busy signals or hung up on after waiting 2 hours. Finally found this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that got me connected to an actual agent in like 15 minutes. They have a video demo showing how it works: https://youtu.be/qyftW-mnTNI. Might be worth trying if you need to check on your adjudication status.

Never heard of that but willing to try anything at this point. Did they charge you for it?

They do charge but it was worth it to finally talk to someone who could see what was holding up my claim. Way less stressful than calling all day.

The economy is definitely weird right now but that doesn't mean your claim should take 6 weeks. Something specific is probably holding it up. Did you work for a small business? Sometimes they don't respond to NYS Department of Labor requests quickly.
