Why is unemployment a problem for NYS Department of Labor claims - need perspective on system issues

I've been dealing with the NYS Department of Labor system for months now and I'm starting to wonder if unemployment itself is causing more problems than it's solving. My claim has been in adjudication for 6 weeks, I can't get through to anyone on the phone, and the online portal keeps glitching. Meanwhile I'm behind on rent and my savings are gone. Is it just me or does the whole unemployment system seem broken? I filed back in November and it's now January and I still haven't received a single payment. At this point I'm wondering if I should just give up and take any job I can find, even if it pays way less than what I was making. Has anyone else felt like the unemployment process is harder than actually being unemployed?

The unemployment system definitely has its challenges, but it's designed as a safety net for a reason. Six weeks in adjudication is unfortunately not uncommon, especially if there are any complications with your claim. The NYS Department of Labor has to verify employment history and investigate any potential issues before releasing payments. I know it's frustrating, but don't give up yet. Have you checked your online account for any outstanding requirements or documents they might need?

I've checked everything multiple times. My account shows no outstanding items and all my documents were uploaded weeks ago. It just says 'adjudication in progress' with no explanation.

I had a similar issue last year and what finally worked was using a service called Claimyr to get through to an actual NYS Department of Labor agent. Check out claimyr.com - they basically wait on hold for you and then connect you when an agent picks up. There's a video demo at https://youtu.be/qyftW-mnTNI that shows how it works. It was the only way I could actually speak to someone about my adjudication delay.

That sounds too good to be true. How much does something like that cost? I'm already struggling financially.

I won't get into pricing here but it was worth it for me to finally get answers about why my claim was stuck. Sometimes you need to invest a little to solve a bigger problem.

The unemployment system isn't perfect but it serves millions of people. Your adjudication delay could be due to a variety of factors - maybe your former employer disputed your claim, or there's a discrepancy in your work history that needs to be resolved. The NYS Department of Labor has legal obligations to investigate claims thoroughly before paying benefits. Try calling first thing Monday morning at 8am when call volume is typically lower.

I've tried calling at every time of day and can never get through! The system just hangs up on you after being on hold forever. It's like they don't want people to actually get help.

totally feel you on this. unemployment was supposed to help me transition between jobs but instead its been nothing but stress and paperwork and waiting. at least when youre working you know money is coming in

I understand the frustration, but remember that unemployment benefits exist because losing a job can be financially devastating. Even with the system's flaws, it's still better than having no safety net at all. Keep filing your weekly claims even during adjudication - if your claim gets approved, you'll receive back payments for all the weeks you were eligible.

I am still filing weekly but it feels pointless when nothing is happening. How long can adjudication actually take?

Legally there's no set time limit, but most adjudications resolve within 8-12 weeks. Complex cases can take longer. The key is making sure you've provided all requested documentation and continue following the process.
