Which of the following statements are true about unemployment insurance NYS Department of Labor quiz help

I'm taking this online course for work and there's a quiz question asking 'which of the following statements are true about unemployment insurance?' but I want to make sure I understand the real NYS Department of Labor rules correctly, not just guess. The course is pretty generic and doesn't get into NY-specific stuff. Can someone help me understand what's actually true about UI benefits in New York? I've never filed before but want to know in case I ever need to. The quiz has multiple choice answers but I don't want to just memorize wrong info.

In New York, unemployment insurance has specific eligibility requirements through NYS Department of Labor. You must have worked and earned wages in at least two quarters of your base period, be able and available for work, and actively seek employment. You also need to file weekly claims to continue receiving benefits. The benefit amount is calculated based on your earnings history, and there's a maximum weekly benefit amount that gets updated annually.

Thanks! So the base period thing - is that the same for everyone or does it depend on when you file?

just took a similar quiz last month for my HR certification and the tricky part is some answers are true in general but not for NY specifically

The job search requirement is a big one people miss on quizzes. In NY you need to make at least 3 work search contacts per week and keep a log. NYS Department of Labor can audit this anytime. Also, you can't just turn down any job offer - it has to be suitable work based on your skills and experience. And if you're on standby status waiting to return to your job, the work search requirement might be waived.

Wait I thought it was 2 job contacts per week? Or did they change it recently?

It's 3 contacts per week in NY. Some other states are different but NYS Department of Labor requires 3. You can check the official guidelines on their website.

If you're struggling with getting through to NYS Department of Labor for clarification on any of these rules, I found this service called Claimyr that helps you actually reach a live agent. Check out claimyr.com - they have a video demo at https://youtu.be/qyftW-mnTNI showing how it works. Really helped when I needed to verify some confusing information about my claim status.

Interesting, might need that if I ever have to file. The phone lines are supposed to be pretty jammed right?

Don't forget about the waiting week! In NY there's no waiting week anymore - you can get benefits for your first week if you're eligible. A lot of quiz questions still include old info about waiting periods that don't apply here. Also, benefits can last up to 26 weeks typically, but that can change during economic emergencies.

good point about the waiting week - my quiz had that wrong too! also the quiz I took asked about taxes and UI benefits are taxable income so you need to report them

Oh yeah I forgot about the tax part. Can you have taxes withheld automatically or do you have to pay quarterly?
