What is EAN number for unemployment benefits at NYS Department of Labor?
I keep seeing references to an 'EAN number' on some unemployment documents but I have no idea what this means. Is this something specific to NYS Department of Labor claims? I've been filing my weekly claims for about 6 weeks now and my payments have been going through fine, but I came across this term in some paperwork and now I'm worried I'm missing something important. Does everyone have an EAN number or is this only for certain types of claims? Really confused here and can't find a clear explanation anywhere on the my.ny.gov site.

EAN stands for Electronic Authorization Number. It's basically a unique identifier that NYS Department of Labor assigns to your unemployment claim for electronic processing. You don't need to worry about finding it or memorizing it - the system handles this automatically when you file your weekly claims online. It's mainly used internally by the department for tracking your benefit payments and claim status.

•Oh thank goodness! I was starting to panic thinking I had missed some important step in the filing process. So I don't need to do anything special with this number?

The EAN is automatically generated when your claim is processed and approved. You might see it referenced if you ever need to contact NYS Department of Labor about payment issues or if there's a problem with your direct deposit. But for normal weekly claims, you won't interact with it directly. If you're getting your payments without issues, everything is working as it should.

•This is really helpful! I had the same confusion when I saw EAN mentioned in some correspondence. Good to know it's just a behind-the-scenes tracking thing.

If you're having trouble reaching NYS Department of Labor to clarify any of these technical details, I had success using a service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that helped me get through to an actual agent. They have a demo video at https://youtu.be/qyftW-mnTNI showing how it works. Really came in handy when I needed to verify some claim details that weren't clear from the online system.

•Thanks for the suggestion! I might check that out if I run into any other confusing terminology or issues with my claim.

I've been dealing with unemployment for months and honestly there's so much confusing jargon and acronyms. EAN, UI, adjudication, standby status... they really don't make it easy to understand what's going on with your own claim sometimes. At least this one doesn't seem to matter much for regular claimants.
