Trying to get NY unemployment since October with no money and scary messages
Been trying to get unemployment since October after losing my job, and it's been a complete nightmare. Haven't received a single payment yet and it's already February. Keep getting these weird messages saying I've exhausted my benefits, but how is that even possible when I haven't gotten ANY MONEY AT ALL? 😡 Every time I manage to get through to someone (which is like winning the lottery), they tell me something completely different. One person says my claim is pending review, another says there's an issue with my employment verification, and the last one told me I need to submit additional documents I never heard about before. I've been applying for jobs religiously and documenting everything in the system. I'm literally down to my last $240 and don't know how I'm going to pay rent next month. The website keeps glitching when I try to check my claim status. Does ANYONE have any advice on what to do or how to actually get a human who can help? This feels completely hopeless at this point.

The ny unemployment system is designed to make u give up. They probably flagged ur account for some BS reason and now ur stuck in verification hell. Keep calling every single day, like literally hundreds of times. That's what I had to do for 3 weeks straight.

•I've literally called 100+ times over the past month. Either busy signal or the automated system just hangs up on me after 20 minutes ðŸ˜

After 6 weeks of getting nowhere with ny unemployment, I finally found a service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that got me connected to an actual agent. They waited on hold for me then connected me when a live person picked up. Talking to an agent got my money released within 3 days after months of nothing. Best decision I made during this whole unemployment nightmare! They even have a YouTube video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE

•Is this some kind of scam? Sounds too good to be true. How does that even work?

•Not a scam at all. They just have a system that calls repeatedly and waits on hold for you. When they get someone, they connect you. Saved me literally days of holding on the phone.

•hmm I've been burned by so many of these 'services' before... what makes this different?

•I was skeptical too but I was desperate. They don't ask for any personal info - they just call DOL and connect you when someone answers. Getting that callback was the only thing that fixed my claim.

•Listen I was in the same boat as you but this actually worked for me. I'm not affiliated with them or anything, just sharing what finally worked after months of frustration.

I got that same scary message!! It's a system glitch that happens to tons of ppl. What worked for me was sending a secure message through the portal specifically asking about the "exhausted benefits" message when u haven't received anything. Takes like 2 weeks to get a response but they fixed mine.

Have you tried contacting your state representative? That's what I did after 2 months of ny unemployment ghosting me. Their office has special contacts at DOL and got my issue resolved in 10 days after I was ready to give up completely.

•I didn't even think of that! How do I find out who my rep is?

•Just google "NY state assembly member" + your neighborhood. Call their office, explain your situation, and ask if they can help with unemployment issues. They'll probably have you fill out a form giving permission to inquire about your case.

•THIS!! My assembly person's office was AMAZING. fixed my issue in 2 weeks after months of nothing. the unemployment ppl actually listen to them.

You need to look for the SPECIFIC error code on those messages. Different codes mean different things. If it says TCO-something that means Technical Claims Office is reviewing. If it says TCC that's a different department. The generic messages are useless but the codes tell you what's actually happening.

•The message had a code that started with BYE-578 or something like that. Does that mean anything?

•BYE means Benefit Year End. That's actually important - sounds like your benefit year expired and you need to file a new claim. The system should have automatically prompted you to do this but it's buggy af. Try starting a new claim application.

Look I've been through the ENTIRE ny unemployment nightmare and finally got it fixed. Here's what actually works: 1. Document everything - dates, names of agents you speak with, confirmation numbers. Keep a dedicated notebook just for this. 2. The regular phone number is useless. Call the TEL-SERVICE number instead (it's on the website under "additional resources") between 7:30-8:00am when they first open. 3. Send messages through the secure messaging portal AND email unemployment.nysdol@labor.ny.gov - sometimes different departments respond to different channels. 4. If you've been applying for jobs, make sure you're recording at least 3 job search activities PER WEEK in the system. They can deny you for not having enough. 5. If all else fails, contact your state assembly person AND state senator. Having both offices inquire creates more pressure. 6. When truly desperate, the fastest way to talk to a human is through claimyr.com - they call repeatedly and connect you when someone answers. Saved me after 4 months of nothing. Hang in there. The system is designed to make you give up, but persistence eventually pays off.

•This should be pinned to the top of this subreddit honestly. Best advice I've seen.

•Thank you so much for such a detailed reply. I'm gonna try the TEL-SERVICE number tomorrow morning.

•Does the claimyr thing really work? Seems sketchy.

•Yeah it does work - they basically use an automated system to keep calling and stay on hold for you. When they get a live person, they call your phone and connect you. It's the only way I ever got through after 100s of calls on my own.

sounds just like my sitch from last year. turns out they had my ssn wrong by ONE DIGIT. took 4 months to figure that out and fix it. make sure all ur personal info is 100% correct in the system.

•Omg I should check that. How did you finally discover the error?

•finally got through to a competent agent who actually looked at my whole file instead of just reading off a script. she noticed the ssn didnt match my identity docs.

Did they send you an email saying you need to verify identity through [ID.me](https://ID.me)? That's what was holding mine up but the notice went to my spam folder for like 2 months 🤡

•Holy crap let me check my spam folder right now... I never thought of that!!

•This happened to me too. ID.me verification email went to spam and I had no idea they needed it. Once I did it my claim was processed in like 3 days.

•Just checked and I don't see anything from ID.me but there are some emails from noreply@labor.ny.gov that I missed! Checking those now.

Have u tried tweeting @NYSLabor? Sounds stupid but they sometimes respond faster there than through official channels. Tag them with your issue (no personal details tho) and they might DM you.

This is going to sound weird but try calling RIGHT when they open and press the Spanish option. The Spanish-speaking agents all speak English too and the wait time is usually WAY shorter. Got through in 15 mins this way after trying the English line for weeks.

•OMG this is the real pro tip right here! I tried it and got through in 20 mins when I had been trying for days on the English line.

If ur getting the "exhausted benefits" message but haven't been paid, it means theres an issue with your BYE date (Benefit Year End). The system thinks your claim is older than it is. You need to talk to someone in the claims processing dept specifically, not just any agent.
