Suspicious auto-approval for ny unemployment claim - is this legit?
My cousin got a text message saying her unemployment claim was auto-approved without her even reapplying. She's confused because she worked some months after the August 2021 reopenings but hasn't worked at all since April 2022. The text says she doesn't need to do anything else and benefits will start processing. She's super suspicious because she never filed a new claim. Has anyone else gotten automatically re-enrolled without filling out any paperwork? This seems weird to me. Could it be some kind of scam or identity theft thing?

That sounds like a scam to me. NY unemployment doesn't just randomly approve claims without you filing one. Tell your cousin to login to her account through the official website (NOT through any link in that text) and check her claim status there. I'd also call them directly to report this - sounds like someone trying to claim benefits using her info.

•Thanks for the heads up. She's gonna check her account, but the weird thing is the text came from the same number she's gotten legit unemployment texts from before.

•Phone numbers can be spoofed easily these days. Definitely have her call directly and check her online account. The scammers are getting really sophisticated 😡

•This happened to my neighbor last month. Someone filed using her info. Took her like 6 weeks to get it sorted out and she had to file a police report.

After being stuck in the ny unemployment void for 3 weeks, I tried this service called claimyr.com that got me connected to an actual human being at unemployment. I explained the situation about potential identity theft and they helped me secure my account and file the right forms to protect myself. Talking to an agent got my situation resolved in days instead of weeks. Check out this video explaining how it works: https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE

•yeah right, another 'miracle solution'... what's the catch? 🙄

•No catch - it just helps you skip the phone queue. They call and wait on hold, then connect you when a real person picks up. Saved me like 3 hours of hold music torture

•wait hold up - does this actually work or is it just the usual BS?

•It worked for me! You still have to talk to the agent yourself so it's not like they're doing anything shady, they just handle the waiting part

MAJOR RED FLAG!!!! This is def identity theft happening. My brother got the same thing in September and someone was trying to claim benefits using his info. He had to freeze his credit and file a police report. Tell your cousin to call unemployment ASAP!!!

I don't think they're doing any automatic re-enrollment. I had to reapply last month and go through the whole process again. And I've been on unemployment before.

•Same. I had to jump through all the hoops. Again. For the third time. 🙃

I think there was a news report about a huge wave of unemployment fraud attempts in NY recently. Something like 12 million in fraudulent claims were stopped last quarter alone. Your cousin should definitely report this.

•I saw that too. They've been stepping up verification bcuz of all the scammers. The fact she didn't verify anything is concerning.

•Can't find it now but it was on the NY state website somewhere. Just google 'ny unemployment fraud statistics 2023' and it should pop up

Here's what you need to do. I work in cybersecurity: 1. DON'T click any links in the text 2. Call NY unemployment directly using the official number from their website 3. Report suspected fraud to them immediately 4. Check credit reports for any suspicious activity 5. Set up credit monitoring/freezes as a precaution 6. File a report with the FTC at identitytheft.gov 7. Document everything - take screenshots of the text Unemployment identity theft is RAMPANT right now. There's no such thing as "automatic approval" without applying. If you're having trouble reaching someone at unemployment, I used claimyr.com which helped me get through to a live agent quickly when dealing with my own identity theft issue. Resolving this FAST is crucial.

what was the exact wording of the text? did it ask her to click a link or provide any info?

•It said something like "Your unemployment claim has been automatically processed and approved. No action needed. Weekly certification will begin on [date]." No link in this one but she did get a second text about "verifying identity" with a sketchy link.

•Yeah that second text confirms it's a scam. They're trying to get her personal info through that "verify identity" link. Classic phishing.

The NYC Department of Labor recently issued a warning about exactly this type of scam. They NEVER auto-approve claims or send texts about starting benefits without you applying first.

I'm dealing with identity theft with ny unemployment right now. Someone filed using my info in October. Its been a NIGHTMARE. Have her call right away and also file a police report ASAP. The sooner she reports it the easier it will be to fix.

•Still fighting it 6 weeks later. Had to send in all kinds of ID verification docs and keep calling to check status. Finally used claimyr.com to actually get through to someone who could help me. Don't wait on this, seriously.

•I waited 13 weeks for my regular claim to process last year and they want us to believe they're now magically auto-approving people? 🤡🤡🤡

Pretty sure what happend is someone applied for benefits using your cousins info. The scammer is probably hoping she ignores it while they collect the $$$. She needs to report this NOW.
