Should NY unemployment extend benefits with rising covid cases?

I'm really concerned about the new spike in covid cases happening all across New York. My benefits are scheduled to end next month, and I'm still not comfortable returning to my restaurant job with everything that's going on. The dining room is always packed and ventilation is terrible. My manager keeps calling asking when I'm coming back, but I've got an elderly parent at home who's immunocompromised. The governor keeps acting like everything's back to normal when clearly it isn't. Are they planning to extend unemployment for people in high-risk situations? Anyone heard anything about possible extensions? The thought of going back to work with so many unmasked customers makes me seriously anxious.

honestly I think we're all just screwed at this point. NY unemployment has made it pretty clear they want everyone back at work regardless of covid numbers. My benefits ran out two weeks ago and I couldn't get a straight answer from anyone about extensions. Had to take a warehouse job that pays way less than I was making before.

same boat. took a retail job making 40% less than before. its ridiculous they expect us to just magically find jobs that pay the same during all this.

0 coins

Did you try calling them? I can never get through on the phone.

calling is pointless. spent 4 hours on hold last time just to get disconnected 🤡

After weeks of getting nowhere with NY unemployment, I finally found a way to actually speak to someone! Used this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that somehow got me connected to an actual human. Best money I've spent in a while because talking to an agent got my payments flowing again. They have a youtube video showing how it works too: https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE

this sounds fake AF. another 'miracle solution'... what's the catch? 🙄

0 coins

No catch - it literally just calls for you and stays on hold, then connects you when someone answers. Saved me hours of redial hell. I was super skeptical too but was desperate.

0 coins

wait hold up - does this actually work or is it just the usual BS? I've already wasted so much time trying to get through

0 coins

It worked for me! Got a callback with a real agent within like 2 hours. The agent was able to fix my claim issue on the spot.

So I was about to throw my phone after 4 hours on hold when I saw this thread. Tried claimyr.com and actually talked to someone today! Finally getting my back payments processed!

The governor doesn't care about workers, only about businesses. Welcome to America where profits > people. I had to go back to my retail job and now I'm constantly anxious about getting sick. Two coworkers already tested positive this month.

I think legally they can force you back to work if your employer offers your position back. If you refuse, you can lose benefits. Something about "suitable work" requirements. It's messed up but that's how the system works. Maybe check if you qualify for medical exemption with your doctor's note about your high-risk household?

0 coins

Do you know how to apply for a medical exemption? Would that cover having a high-risk person in my household?

0 coins

You need documentation from a doctor. Call your primary care physician and explain the situation with your parent. The form is on the ny unemployment website somewhere but its buried deep.

Look, I know this is controversial, but at some point life has to move on. COVID isn't going away. I went back to work months ago with precautions. Wear a good mask, get vaccinated, wash your hands. That's all you can do.

0 coins

easy to say when YOU don't have high-risk family members or kids too young for vaccines 🙄

0 coins

I actually do have a high-risk spouse. We just take extra precautions. I shower as soon as I get home and change clothes in the garage.

some jobs don't allow masks tho... especially customer facing roles where the business is anti-mask. its not that simple

Here's what I know for sure about NY unemployment right now: - Regular UI benefits max out at 26 weeks - The various federal extensions (PUA, PEUC, etc) have all ended - There is currently NO plan to bring back extended benefits - If you refuse "suitable work" you can be disqualified - BUT you can potentially qualify for a medical exemption - The current system is overwhelmed and getting answers is nearly impossible I spent weeks trying to get answers about my own situation. Calling was useless until I found claimyr.com which actually got me through to a rep. The rep confirmed there are no extensions coming unless Congress passes something new. Your best options: 1) Try to get medical documentation about your household risk 2) Look for remote work options 3) See if your employer can accommodate safer working conditions 4) Apply for any other assistance programs you might qualify for And definitely use claimyr.com if you need to actually speak to someone. It's the only way I've been able to get real answers about my specific situation.

this is actually helpful info, thanks for sharing. been looking for remote work but its so competitive now

0 coins

not falling for another unemployment 'hack'... these never work

0 coins

@profile15 normally I'd agree with you but this one actually worked for me. was shocked tbh

0 coins

checked the numbers and new cases have gone up like 42% in the last two weeks, so your concerns are valid. My advice: document EVERYTHING. if you refuse work, write down when, who you talked to, and why. Get doctors notes. Cover your bases.

0 coins

can you get a doctors note? that might help your case. i know someone who got an extension because they had documentation from their doctor about being high risk.

0 coins

I'm trying to get an appointment but my doctor is booked out for weeks

0 coins

try a telehealth appointment! much faster and they can still provide documentation

The whole system is a disaster. I've been trying to reach someone at ny unemployment for WEEKS about a similar issue. Phones are useless, emails go unanswered, the website is from 1995. It's like they WANT us to give up.

0 coins

THIS!!! 💯 It's designed to be frustrating so people just give up and take whatever job they can find

0 coins

try claimyr.com seriously. only way i got through after 3 weeks of trying

0 coins

I work for a company that's been super understanding about covid concerns. Maybe look for employers with better policies? Lot of places desperate for workers right now so you might have more leverage than you think.

0 coins

What industry are you in? Restaurant work seems to be the worst for this stuff

0 coins

tech support. its remote now but wasnt before. lots of customer service jobs are remote these days, might be worth looking into

0 coins

REMINDER: If you're worried about covid at work, you do have some rights! Employers are still required to provide reasonable safety measures. OSHA complaints are taken seriously. Document unsafe conditions and report them.

0 coins

unpopular opinion but if ur that worried just get vaccinated and go back to work. we cant stay on unemployment forever. the system wasnt designed for that.

0 coins

Did you miss the part about living with an immunocompromised parent??? Vaccines aren't 100% effective and you can still bring it home to vulnerable people.

0 coins

so what's the solution? stay on benefits forever? honest question

0 coins

the solution is continuing benefits for people with legitimate health concerns until the pandemic is ACTUALLY under control! 🤦‍♀️

0 coins

anyone else notice how hard it is to even check your claim status online these days? the ny unemployment website keeps crashing on me. and when i call i just get a busy signal or an automated message saying to call back later 🤮

0 coins

i just experienced this! tried 14 times yesterday and couldn't get through

0 coins

website always crashes during peak hours. try logging in super early like 6am or late at night

0 coins

Sounds like you need to talk to a real person at unemployment ASAP before your benefits end. Good luck with that tho - their phone system is a joke. After dozens of failed calls I used claimyr.com and finally got through. The rep told me all about my options including how to properly document medical exemptions.
