Shared Work Program claim showing error after working 10 hours - NY unemployment payment delay?
I'm enrolled in the Shared Work Program with ny unemployment and I'm super confused right now. When I certified yesterday, the system showed a message saying I had a "break in claim" but I only worked 10 hours this week (which is less than full-time). According to the rules this shouldn't count as any days worked since it's under 4 hours per day. Now I'm worried my payment that usually hits on Wednesday will be delayed. Has anyone seen this error before? Do I have to wait for some form to come in the mail before they'll release my benefits? My rent is due next week and I'm counting on this money. Anyone know if this is just a glitch or if I actually have a problem with my claim?

The same exact thing happened to me in march! The system is so buggy. When I called they said something about how the Shared Work Program uses different hour calculations than regular UI. I think you need to talk to someone. I tried for 3 days and could never get thru until I found this service claimyr.com that got me a callback from an actual agent. It was the best money I ever spent to finally get my benefits released. They fixed it right away once I talked to someone. Check it out here: https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE

•does this actually work? i've been waiting on hold for 4+ hours multiple days in a row and keep getting disconnected... ive heard of scams before

•I was skeptical at first too, but it worked for me. They don't answer for you, they just wait on hold and then connect you with an agent when one picks up. Totally saved me from waiting on hold for hours.

•wait hold up - does this actually work or is it just the usual BS? ive tried everything to get thru on those phone lines 🙄

•It's not BS, I swear. I was at my wits end before using it. They just hold your place in line and call you when they get a real person. Saved me from wasting my whole day on hold.

•This is giving me hope lol. I've been trying to call for like 2 weeks with no luck. I'll check out that link

Ugh the shared work program is so confusing. I had a similar issue last month. The problem is that the system sees ANY change in your hours as a possible break in claim. Even if you're still working reduced hours, if the number of hours changed from your previous certification, it can trigger this. You might still get paid but there's also a chance they'll hold your payment until they review it. Best thing to do: call first thing tomorrow morning. Like literally start calling at 7:59am. That's how I finally got through. Be prepared to wait on hold for an hour or more though. They can usually override the system if it's just a misunderstanding about your hours.

•u srsly think anyone can get thru at 8am? 😂 I tried that for a week straight. The unemployment phone system is completely broken. Literally couldn't even get into the hold queue.

•True true, it's rough. It took me like 17 attempts over 3 days even with the early calls. Sometimes I wonder if they even have real people working there lol

•Thanks for the suggestions! I did try calling today but the automated system just kept hanging up on me after going through all the prompts. So frustrating!

This happens all the time in the Shared Work Program. I've been in it since November. Here's what's probably going on: if your hours fluctuate EVEN BY ONE HOUR from week to week, the system sometimes flags it as a break. The good news is that you should still get paid for the hours that were already approved in your shared work plan. DO NOT wait for a form in the mail – those can take weeks! You need to call them ASAP. I know it's almost impossible to get through, but that's the only way to get it resolved quickly. Try calling right when they open or right before they close. Those were the only times I ever got through. Also, make sure your employer filed their report correctly. Sometimes the issue is on their end.

I work for a company that uses shared work and we see this ALL THE TIME with our employees. The most likely cause is that your employer's report didn't match exactly with what you certified. Even a 15-minute difference can trigger this stupid error message. You should still get at least partial payment on Wednesday, but it might be less than expected while they sort it out. Call them to get it fixed faster, otherwise they'll mail you something and it could take 2-3 weeks to resolve.

•That's helpful to know! My employer is pretty small and new to the program so you might be right. Do you know if I should tell my HR person to contact them too? Or just me?

•Both. Your employer should check their Shared Work portal to make sure they submitted your hours correctly. But you should definitely call too because ultimately it's your benefits at stake. DOL is more likely to fix it quickly if they hear from both sides.

THE WHOLE SYSTEM IS A JOKE! I had the exact problem in February. I was in the shared work program and got the same message. Tried calling for THREE WEEKS and never got through. My payment was delayed for over a month. Literally had to borrow money from family to make rent. The unemployment system in NY is completely broken. Good luck.

•this is why I finally broke down and used claimyr.com after two weeks of trying to call myself. Couldn't believe I actually got to talk to a human being after using it.

•Wish I had known about that. Would've saved me a lot of stress and a very awkward conversation with my landlord...

I'm a former NYSDOL employee and I can tell you exactly what's happening. The Shared Work Program operates on an older system that doesn't integrate well with the main UI system. When you certify, the main system sees hours worked as a potential disqualification, then it has to reconcile with the Shared Work rules. Your payment will likely be delayed until a staff member manually reviews it. Unfortunately, there's a significant backlog of these reviews. Your best bet is to contact them directly: 1. Call the Shared Work specific number, not the regular UI number 2. Be prepared with your exact hours worked 3. Have your employer contact them as well 4. If you absolutely cannot get through by phone, you can try emailing but that's usually even slower If you need immediate help, I recommend using claimyr.com - it's a service that will wait on hold for you and call when an agent is available. I've heard many former colleagues say it's actually helping people get through the impossible phone lines. Just know that this is a very common issue with Shared Work claims and it almost always gets resolved, but rarely without intervention by phone.

•This is super helpful info! Do you happen to know the direct number for Shared Work? The one I have just routes me back to the main unemployment line 😫

•The dedicated Shared Work number should be 518-457-5807. If that's not working, unfortunately they may have consolidated it with the main line due to staffing issues (which happened periodically). In that case, when you call the main line, immediately say "Shared Work Program" when prompted.

•I'm in the same boat with a shared work claim issue. Just tried that number and it's still active but goes to voicemail after 3 rings. Left a message but not holding my breath 😩

don't panic yet! this has happened to me twice with shared work. both times my payment was only delayed by one day. the system is super glitchy but sometimes it works itself out. if you don't get paid by thursday then start worrying and calling.

Everyone in my office is on shared work and we all get different random errors every few weeks. My coworker had the exact same issue last pay period. Her money was delayed but she eventually got it without having to talk to anyone. Mine always processes fine but another guy always has problems. There's literally no rhyme or reason to it. The whole system is held together with duct tape and prayers.

I wouldn't worry too much. The shared work program has different rules about "days worked" versus "hours worked" and the online system sometimes gets confused. When you certify weekly, it asks about days worked, but the shared work program actually tracks hours. So if you worked 2.5 hours on 4 different days (totaling 10 hours), the system might think you worked 4 days, which would be a break in claim. But under shared work rules, you didn't work any "days" since each day was under 4 hours. I've been through this a few times and usually it gets sorted automatically within 2-3 days. If you don't get paid by Thursday, then start calling.

•That makes a lot of sense actually! I worked 2 hours on Monday, 3 on Tuesday, 3 on Wednesday, and 2 on Thursday. So in theory that should be 0 days worked according to their rules. Hoping it sorts itself out like you said!

Look at your most recent Shared Work plan that was approved. Does it specifically list 10 hours as your approved weekly schedule? If your approved plan was for a different number of hours (say 15) and you only worked 10, that could trigger the error even though you're still part-time. The system is specifically looking for a MATCH between what was approved in your Shared Work plan and what you actually worked. Any deviation, even working FEWER hours, can trigger this message. I recommend calling the Telephone Claims Center as soon as possible. If you can't get through (which is likely), consider using a service like claimyr.com which will wait on hold and connect you when a rep is available. I used them last month when I had a similar issue and they saved me hours of frustration.

•This might be it! My approved plan is for 20 hours (half of my normal 40), but we were slower this week so I only worked 10. I didn't realize that working LESS could also cause a problem.

•Exactly! The Shared Work Program is super strict about matching exactly what was approved. Any change, even downward, needs a new certification from your employer. It's ridiculous but that's how they designed it.

i swear ny unemployment has the worst technology ever created. every. single. week. there's some new glitch or error message. like they built this system in 1995 and never updated it. i feel for you.
