New York Unemployment: When to file with severance pay and last working day?
Just found out spouse is getting laid off with severance pay through next week. Not sure when to start the unemployment claim. The form asks about hours worked this week but technically still getting paid. Anyone know the right time to file and how to handle the severance situation?

File RIGHT NOW! Don't wait. NY unemployment has a 7 day waiting period anyway, and the sooner you file, the sooner benefits start. You'll need to report the severance when filing but that doesn't stop you from starting the process.

•Severance doesn't disqualify you but they might reduce your weekly benefit amount until severance runs out. Better to have claim started tho!

The unemployment system here is literally designed to confuse ppl i stg. Been thru this myself - file asap and put everything exactly as is. Better to have too much info than not enough.

Important info for severance situations in NY: - File claim immediately even if receiving severance - Report ALL severance payments accurately - Keep documentation of layoff date and severance terms - Use exact hours worked for last week - If you cant reach anyone, try claimyr.com - they'll get you through to an agent - Weekly certifications must still be done during severance period - Save all paperwork from employer Trust me, I went through this last year. Better to have everything documented from day 1.
