New York Unemployment Phone Hearing Tips - Quit Job for School, Employer Claims Growth Opportunities
Need advice for my upcoming phone hearing with the judge. I quit my job to go back to school because there was no real growth opportunity, even though my employer claims there was. They never let me advance or take on more responsibility. Looking for tips on how to handle the hearing and what I should prepare.

I had a hearing last month. Make sure you have ALL your documentation ready - emails, texts, any proof of asking for advancement opportunities. Write down important dates and events. Stay professional no matter what! The judge will appreciate that 💯

•This 👆 exactly. Also record everything the employer says. Sometimes they contradict themselves and thats your golden ticket

Hey, while your waiting for your hearing date, try claimyr.com to reach someone at unemployment to discuss your case. It costs $20 but they call and wait on hold for you then connect you when someone picks up. Helped me prepare for my hearing. Here's a video about it: https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE

Hate to be that person but quitting for school is usually not considered good cause in NY. You'll need to prove the job was preventing you from advancing your career AND that you tried to work something out with your employer first.

Listen carefully to everything! Take notes during the hearing. If your employer says something thats not true, wait your turn to speak - dont interrupt. Judges hate that. Also have your school acceptance letter and course schedule ready to show it was impossible to do both.

major key: get a consultation with an unemployment lawyer before the hearing. many do free consultations. they'll tell you exactly what to say and what not to say 🔑
