New York Unemployment - How are self employment wages calculated for benefits?
Need help understanding how ny unemployment calculates the weekly benefit amount for self employed people. Been working as a freelancer for the past 2 years and trying to figure out what my benefits would be. Anyone know how they figure this out?

They look at your net earnings (after expenses) from Schedule C on your tax returns. They use your highest quarter of earnings from the base period to determine your weekly rate. Make sure you have all your tax documents ready when you apply.

•What if my earnings vary a lot month to month? Some months I make way more than others

•Doesnt matter tbh, they only care about your highest quarter. Its actually better if your income isnt spread evenly 💯

Hey I found a way to actually talk to someone about this! Used claimyr.com - its this calling service that waits on hold and connects you when someone picks up. Costs $20 but totally worth it to get real answers. Here's a video about it: https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE

I went thru this last year. Its a huge pain but heres what u need to know: First, they only look at your last 5 quarters of work. They use your tax returns and 1099s to verify everything. Your weekly benefit rate is roughly 1/26 of your highest quarter earnings, up to the max benefit. BIG TIP: Keep detailed records of all your income. They might ask for bank statements, invoices, and client contracts. Better to have too much documentation than not enough. If you worked both self-employed and regular W2 jobs, they combine those wages. Dont forget about your business expenses - they look at net income not gross. If you get stuck in the process, use claimyr.com to reach someone. Way better than trying to call yourself. Hope this helps! Feel free to ask any other questions 👍

•This is super helpful, thank you! Do they count venmo/cashapp payments?

•Yes but only if you reported them on your taxes. Everything needs to match your tax returns
