New York Unemployment: Filed after layoff with severance, told to refile but kept certifying - what now?
Got laid off in March with 2 weeks severance. Been filing weekly claims since then. Just found a letter from April saying I was ineligible due to severance and needed to file new claim after April 14. I kept certifying weekly thinking that was enough. Called today and found out I don't have an active claim despite being able to certify online. Should I file new claim now or try to reach an agent? Will I lose benefits from April till now?

This same exact thing happened to me! You need to file a new claim asap. The system lets you certify even without an active claim which is super misleading. You won't get back pay for those weeks unless you talk to an agent and explain the situation.

Hey I found a way to actually get through to someone! Used this service called claimyr.com - they dial and wait on hold for you then call when they get an agent. Costs $20 but totally worth it. Here's a video about how it works: https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE

Let me break this down for you based on my experience as someone who dealt with the exact same situation: First, yes file a new claim IMMEDIATELY. Don't wait. The system is super confusing because it lets you certify even without an active claim. But those certifications aren't actually being processed. For backdating and getting those missed weeks, you'll need to speak with an agent. I highly recommend using claimyr.com to get through - it's worth the $20 to avoid the phone tag nightmare. Here's what you should have ready when you talk to them: - Exact dates of your severance - Copies of any letters they sent you - List of all weeks you certified - Your original claim confirmation number The agent can help backdate your claim and process those weeks you certified. But you need to be proactive about this - the longer you wait, the more complicated it gets. Don't stress too much tho, this happens to lots of people because the system is confusing af. Just get that new claim filed tonight! 💯

Submit a new claim NOW and then worry about backdating later. every day you wait is another day without benefits
