NYS Department of Labor unemployment claim taking forever - why is unemployment taking so long 2024?
Filed my unemployment claim back in early December and it's now been almost 6 weeks with no movement. The status just says 'under review' and I can't get through to anyone at NYS Department of Labor when I call. I lost my job at a manufacturing plant in November and thought this would be straightforward but apparently not. My coworker who got laid off the same day had his approved in 10 days! What's going on with these delays? I'm behind on rent and really need to know if there's something wrong with my claim.

Same boat here, filed in mid December and still waiting. The my.ny.gov site doesn't show any issues but no payments either. This is ridiculous.

•At least I'm not the only one. Did you try calling the 888 number? I've been trying for weeks.

The delays are unfortunately pretty common right now. NYS Department of Labor is dealing with increased claim volume and staffing issues. If your claim shows 'under review' it could be in adjudication which means they need additional information to verify your eligibility. Check if you have any pending issues in your online account under the 'Claim Status' section.

•I checked and don't see any pending issues listed. Just says under review with no explanation.

•Sometimes the adjudication doesn't show up as a pending issue right away. They might be verifying your work history or separation reason with your employer.

I had the same problem last year and it took 8 weeks total. Turns out my employer disputed the claim and NYS Department of Labor had to investigate. You might want to try reaching out through a service like claimyr.com - they help you get through to actual agents at NYS Department of Labor. I watched their demo video at https://youtu.be/qyftW-mnTNI and it seemed legit.

•Never heard of that service but I'm desperate at this point. The regular phone lines are impossible.

•Seriously? You have to pay someone just to talk to your own state agency? This system is broken.

ugh this is so stressful! I'm in week 4 of waiting and keep checking my account every day hoping something changed. What if they deny it after all this waiting?? I documented everything when I got laid off but still worried something went wrong.

•Try not to panic. Most claims do get approved eventually, even if there are delays. Make sure you keep filing your weekly claims even while waiting for the initial determination.

The 2024 delays have been worse than usual from what I've seen. Budget cuts at NYS Department of Labor mean fewer staff to process claims. Your best bet is to keep trying the phone lines early morning around 8am when they open, or try that claimyr thing someone mentioned if you're really stuck.

•Good tip about calling at 8am, I'll try that tomorrow. Thanks for the info about the budget cuts, at least explains what's happening.
