NYS Department of Labor unemployment benefits - when you get unemployment what happens next?
I just got approved for unemployment benefits through NYS Department of Labor and I'm honestly not sure what happens next. My claim status changed to 'payable' yesterday but I haven't received any money yet. Do I need to do something else or just wait? Also, when am I supposed to start doing the weekly claims? The my.ny.gov portal shows I need to certify but I'm confused about the timing. This is my first time dealing with unemployment so any guidance would be really helpful.

Congratulations on getting approved! You'll need to file your weekly claim certification every week to continue receiving benefits. Your first payment usually comes 2-3 business days after you file your first weekly claim. Make sure you're doing your job search activities and keeping a log - NYS Department of Labor requires 3 work search contacts per week.

•Thank you! Do I start the job search requirement immediately or is there a waiting period?

The weekly certification is crucial - you must file it every Sunday through Saturday for the previous week. If you miss filing your weekly claim, you won't get paid for that week. The job search requirement starts immediately unless you're on standby status. You need to keep detailed records of your job search activities including company names, contact dates, and positions applied for.

•Wait, I thought you could file the weekly claims anytime during the week? I've been filing mine on Tuesday mornings...

•You can file anytime Sunday through Saturday for the previous week, but most people do it Sunday or Monday. As long as you file within that window you're good.

I had major issues getting through to NYS Department of Labor when I had questions about my weekly claims. Spent hours on hold just to get disconnected. Eventually found this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that actually got me through to an agent in like 15 minutes. They have a video demo showing how it works: https://youtu.be/qyftW-mnTNI. Saved me so much frustration trying to reach someone at the unemployment office.

•How much does that cost? I'm trying to save money while I'm unemployed.

•I understand wanting to save money. For me it was worth it because I was losing sleep worrying about my claim status and couldn't get answers any other way. But definitely try the regular phone lines first.

The whole system is such a mess honestly. They make it so complicated when it should be simple - you're unemployed, you need money, here's your benefits. Instead it's endless forms and certifications and job search requirements that half the time don't even make sense for your industry.

•I hear you but the job search stuff actually helped me stay motivated during my unemployment. Kept me in the habit of applying places.
