NY unemployment wants proof of self-employment income from 2020 - will Schedule C be enough?

I started working as a self-employed contractor in the beginning of 2020 and filed for unemployment in May 2020 when my work completely dried up. I was paid mostly in cash for odd jobs and handyman work, but I reported everything correctly on my taxes using Schedule C since I'm self-employed. Now the unemployment office is asking me to verify my income from that period. I'm wondering if sending just my Schedule C form from my 2020 tax return would be sufficient as proof of income? I don't have many other records since most clients paid me in cash. Has anyone else gone through this verification process with NY unemployment for self-employment income? I'm worried they might deny my claim if I don't have enough documentation.

Rebecca Johnston

Schedule C should definitely be enough. That's what I submitted when they asked for proof of my freelance income. Just make sure you include the whole thing and not just part of it. They needed to see my total income and expenses.

Thanks for the reassurance! Did you have to wait long after submitting your Schedule C before they approved your claim?

It took about 3 weeks for them to process it, but then everything went thru fine. Just don't forget to include ALL the pages of the Schedule C!

This wasn't my experience at all. They wanted additional proof beyond Schedule C. Had to fight with them for months 😡

After spending WEEKS trying to reach someone at ny unemployment by phone, I finally found a service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that actually got me connected with a rep who helped clear up my documentation issues. Talking to an agent got my benefits unlocked so fast, and they were able to tell me exactly what docs I needed to submit. Check out this video about how it works: https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE

Hmm sounds interesting. How exactly does this work? Is it some kind of app or service?

Yeah it basically calls the unemployment office for you and stays on hold, then rings your phone when an actual human picks up. Saved me like 4 hours of hold music lol. Their website explains it better than I can - claimyr.com

yeah right, another 'miracle solution'... what's the catch? 🙄

No catch! I was skeptical too but I was desperate after trying to get through for 2 weeks. It actually works - they just call and wait on hold for you. When I finally got through, the agent confirmed my Schedule C was enough but I needed to upload it through their document portal instead of faxing it.

wait hold up - does this actually work or is it just the usual BS? the unemployment system is so broken i've tried everything

It worked for me! Was finally able to talk to someone who could actually fix my claim instead of getting disconnected for the 100th time 🙌

I went through this EXACT thing in July last year. So Schedule C is technically sufficient but it depends who reviews your case. If they want additional proof, they'll accept bank statements showing deposits that match up with your reported income, any invoices/receipts you created, or client contracts. Do you have any of those as backup?

From my experience, NY unemployment is realy picky about proof of income for self-employed people. They initially rejected my Schedule C and demanded more documentation. I had to send them bank statements, client invoices, and even emails confirming work arrangements. It was a total nightmare tbh. But eventually they accepted it after I called like 50 times.

Same here! They made me jump through so many hoops. Took 4 months to get approved. The system is rigged against self-employed people 😤

How many times did you have to call before actually getting through? I've been trying for days!

I literally called over 100 times across 3 weeks. Most of the time I got disconnected. Used up all my phone battery every day 🙃

Schedule C alone was NOT enough for me. Here's what I learned dealing with NY unemployment for self-employment verification: First, Schedule C is a good starting point, but have backup ready. They often want to see: - Bank statements showing income deposits - Any 1099s if you have them (even if just a few) - Client invoices or service agreements - Email communications about work - Business expense receipts that match Schedule C I recommend uploading EVERYTHING at once rather than waiting for them to request more. Their system is incredibly backed up, and each time they need additional docs, it could delay your case by weeks. If they reject your documentation, YOU MUST SPEAK WITH SOMEONE. This is where many people get stuck. The phone lines are nearly impossible to get through on, but I finally had success using Claimyr.com which got me connected to an agent after trying for weeks on my own. The agent was able to review my case on the spot and approve my documentation. Also, make sure you're uploading to the correct portal and that the files are clearly labeled and readable. I've heard horror stories of people submitting docs that were too blurry or had pages missing. Good luck! The system is frustrating but persistence pays off.

Wow, this is super detailed and helpful. Thank you so much for taking the time to write all this out! I'll definitely gather all that documentation just in case.

is claimyr actually legit? never heard of it before

Yeah it's legit. I was desperate after trying for 3 weeks straight to get through the phone lines. They basically stay on hold for you and call when there's a human on the line. Worth every penny since I was about to lose my apartment without that unemployment money coming through.

I submitted just my Schedule C and a written statement explaining my cash situation and it worked fine. Got approved in about 10 days. Don't overthink it!

You got lucky! My friend did the exact same thing and got denied. The system is completely inconsistent.

The unemployment office is trying to catch people who filed fraudulent claims. If your Schedule C matches what you reported when you initially applied, you should be ok. But if theres a big difference they might flag your account and make you pay everything back.

That makes me nervous. I think the amounts should match but now I'm second-guessing myself about what I put on my initial application... it was so long ago.

You can request a copy of your initial application by calling them or through your online account. Better to check before submitting anything.

Anyone else notice they seem to be doing a ton of these "verifications" lately? Feels like they're looking for any excuse to deny claims or ask for money back.

Yep! My cousin and two friends all got these requests within the past month. Definitely seems like they're doing some kind of sweep.

They're broke af and looking for ways to recoup money. Classic government move 🤡

Be super careful with this! My friend only submitted Schedule C and got denied, then had to pay back $14,500 in benefits! Make sure you have as much documentation as possible, even if it's just bank statements or emails from clients.

Does anyone know if theres a deadline for submitting this documentation? I got a similar request but can't find any clear deadline information.

0 coins

-

Kaitlyn Otto

Usually its 7-10 business days from when they send the request, but sometimes it's longer. Check the notice they sent you carefully.

If you miss the deadline, you can still submit it with an explanation for the delay. Better late than never. I submitted mine 2 weeks late and they still accepted it.

I recommend calling them to confirm exactly what they need. Each case is different and sometimes the generic notices don't tell the whole story. Yes the phone lines suck but its better than submitting the wrong docs and waiting weeks only to be rejected.

GL with that lol... I tried calling for 2 weeks and never got through 💀

Try claimyr.com - they get you through to a rep. Beats spending your whole day on hold!

whatever you do, KEEP COPIES OF EVERYTHING you submit and take screenshots of confirmation pages. the ny unemployment system is notorious for "losing" documentation and then blaming you.

-

KingKongZilla

Good advice! I'll definitely make sure to save everything. Would you recommend sending it with some kind of delivery confirmation too?

100% yes. And if you can upload through their portal instead of mailing, even better. Either way, screenshot/document EVERYTHING. Ive been burned by them before.

I think it depends on how much you were getting in benefits. For small claims they might just accept Schedule C, but if you were getting a lot they tend to scrutinize more and ask for additional proof.

Don't send originals!!! Only copies. And black out any sensitive info like SSN, bank account numbers, etc. Just leave your name, address, and the income information visible.

FYI - they're specifically targeting self-employed claims from 2020 right now. my coworker who was W-2 employed didn't get any verification requests, but three of us who were self-employed all got them in the last month.

Not surprised. They're probably looking for people who claimed self-employment just to get benefits when PUA came out.

Make sure your Schedule C matches what you originally reported when you applied for unemployment. That's what they're checking. If the numbers don't match, you might have to explain why.

i was in exactly ur situation last year and i sent my schedule c plus a few venmo/cashapp receipts i had. got approved with no issues.

That's reassuring! Most of my payments were cash but I do have some Venmo transactions I could include.

Yo they are mad strict these days with verifying self-employment. My buddy just got hit with a $22k overpayment bill cuz they said his documentation wasn't sufficient. He submitted Schedule C but they wanted more proof that he was actually working before covid. Def include anything else you can find.

Send Schedule C plus any of these if you have them: - Proof of advertising your services - Business cards - Website screenshots - Client testimonials - Social media posts about your work - Text messages arranging jobs They're looking for anything that proves you were legitimately self-employed and not just claiming it to get benefits.

I do have some old business cards and texts arranging jobs! Never thought those would come in handy for this. Thank you.
