NY unemployment direct deposit not working with Chime anymore - what's going on?
Has anyone tried setting up direct deposit for NY unemployment benefits with Chime recently? I just tried to enter my Chime account for direct deposit on the NYSDOL site and got some weird error message saying my bank wasn't accepting direct deposits from them anymore. I've been using Chime for everything else with no problems! Did NY unemployment stop allowing Chime accounts for benefits? Really don't want to wait for paper checks since that takes way longer to get my money. Anyone know what's going on or found a workaround?

•So frustrating! Did you end up just getting paper checks instead? Or did you find a different bank that works?

This is a recent change. NYSDOL updated their direct deposit system in February 2025 and several online banks including Chime are currently having compatibility issues with their new verification process. It's not just you - it's happening to a lot of people. The department says they're working on it, but there's no timeline for when it will be fixed. In the meantime, your options are: 1. Use a traditional bank account if you have one 2. Open a new account at a credit union (most seem to be working fine) 3. Accept paper checks (which as you noted take 5-7 days longer) 4. Use the NY debit card option (though this has higher fees

•Thank you so much for explaining! Do you know if online accounts from major banks (like Capital One 360) are working? I might be able to open one of those instead.

•Yes, most major bank online accounts like Capital One 360, Chase Online, and Bank of America are working fine with the system. It's primarily the internet-only banks without physical branches that are having issues. If you already have a Capital One account, that should work without problems.

I HAD THIS EXACT PROBLEM!! the unemployment system is GARBAGE. i wasted like 3 weeks trying to fix this and couldn't get anyone on the phone to help. ended up just taking the stupid paper checks which took forever to arrive. thanks NY for making everything harder than it needs to be!!!

I found a way around this actually. If you set up your direct deposit before you file your weekly claim, it seems to work better. I had to call and get my Chime account manually added by a rep though. The trick is actually getting through to someone on the phone. I had to call literally 27 times before I got through last month for a different issue.

•That's helpful! But wow, 27 calls is insane. I've already tried calling 5 times today with no luck. How long did you wait between calls?

•I basically just kept hitting redial whenever I got the busy signal. Took me about 2 hours of trying on and off. Mornings are usually better but it's still a nightmare getting through.

I had the same issue with Chime last month, and after days of trying to reach someone at NYSDOL with no luck, I discovered this service called Claimyr that got me through to an agent in about 20 minutes. They basically keep dialing for you until they get through, then connect you. The agent was able to manually add my Chime account to the system. If you're still struggling to reach someone, you might want to check out their site at claimyr.com - they have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE Just sharing because it saved me from having to switch banks or wait for paper checks. The unemployment rep told me they're aware of the Chime issue and have a workaround, but you need to speak to someone directly.

•Thanks for the tip! I'm going to try calling a few more times myself tomorrow, but if I still can't get through I'll definitely check this out. Did the agent say if they're working on fixing the system issue with Chime?

•The agent I spoke with said they're aware of the compatibility issues with several online banks and are working on a fix, but she couldn't give me a timeline. She mentioned they've had to manually add hundreds of Chime accounts in the past month, so it's definitely a widespread problem. Hope you get through tomorrow!

I work in banking and can explain what's happening. The issue isn't just with NY unemployment - several states are implementing new fraud prevention measures for direct deposits to online-only banks. Chime specifically has had issues with their routing number verification system integrating with government payment systems. This affects unemployment deposits, tax refunds, and some other government payments. You have three main options: 1) Call NYSDOL and have them manually add your Chime account (this works but requires getting through to someone) 2) Use a traditional bank account temporarily 3) Accept the debit card option which processes faster than paper checks The compatibility issue should be resolved within the next 2-3 months as Chime is working on updating their systems to meet the new security protocols.

•This is really helpful context, thank you! I didn't realize it was part of new fraud prevention measures. I think I'll try calling first to see if they can manually add my Chime account, and if that doesn't work, I'll go with the debit card option. Paper checks just take way too long.

Wait, I'm confused. I've been using Chime for my NY unemployment since January and haven't had any issues with my deposits. Are we sure this is affecting all Chime accounts? Or maybe it only affects new setups??

•You're right to question this. The issue specifically affects NEW direct deposit setups or changes to existing direct deposit information. If you already had Chime set up before the system update in February, your deposits should continue without interruption as you're grandfathered in the old system.

•That's smart! I might ask my roommate if I can use their bank account temporarily. Thanks for the idea!

Update: I finally got through on the phone this morning (called right when they opened at 8am). The rep said they're aware of the Chime issue and they have to manually override something in their system to make it work. My deposit went through to my Chime account today with no problems! So definitely worth trying to reach someone by phone.
