NY unemployment claim expired 8/1 - ID.me verification error due to name change

I need help ASAP with my NY unemployment claim! My benefit year expired on August 1, 2025, and I was still able to certify this week, but haven't received any payment. When I tried to file a new claim, the system directed me to ID.me for verification. The problem is I can't complete the ID.me verification because NYS unemployment still has my previous last name in their system, not my current legal name. The names don't match so ID.me keeps rejecting me. I'm completely stuck and can't find any working number to call NYS Unemployment directly. Has anyone dealt with this name mismatch issue before? How do I get this fixed when I can't even reach a human?

This is a really common problem that happens when your benefit year expires. When your benefit year ends, you need to file a new claim, even if you still have money on your old claim. The name mismatch with ID.me is trickier though. You'll need to: 1. Try to update your personal information through your NY.gov account first 2. If that doesn't work, you'll need to speak with an actual NYSDOL agent The official NYSDOL phone number is 1-888-209-8124, but as you've discovered, it's nearly impossible to get through. Their phone system is completely overwhelmed.

Thanks for the info. I tried updating through my NY.gov account but there's no option to change my name there - it only lets me update address and phone number. I've been calling that number for 2 days straight and can't get through at all. It either disconnects me or tells me to call back later. I'm getting desperate since I have bills due next week!

3 weeks?? I can't wait that long! Did you ever get it resolved? What finally worked for you?

I had a similar issue with ID.me verification. Here's a detailed solution that worked for me: 1. Go to ID.me's direct customer support at help.id.me 2. Submit a support ticket explaining the name mismatch issue 3. Include documentation of your legal name change (marriage certificate, court order, etc.) 4. In the meantime, try the NYSDOL Technical Support line at 1-855-528-5618 (sometimes easier to reach than the main line) 5. If all else fails, contact your state representative's office - they can often intervene with NYSDOL on your behalf NYSDOL has a specific procedure for name changes, but you need to speak with an agent to initiate it. The issue is that the expired claim + name mismatch creates a double problem.

This is great advice. I work in a related field and just want to add - when you contact ID.me support, ask specifically for a "name exception review". They have a process for this but you need to request it specifically using those terms.

I tried the message center too and got an automated response saying they'd reply in 5-7 business days. I can't wait that long! Has anyone found a reliable way to actually reach a person?

I faced this EXACT situation last month with the name mismatch issue. After DAYS of frustration trying to reach someone, I discovered a service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that got me through to an unemployment agent in about 20 minutes when I'd been trying for days on my own. They have this system that waits on hold for you and calls you back when they reach an agent. Totally worth it. They have a video that shows how it works: https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE Once I got through to an actual person, they were able to update my name in the system and send me special instructions for completing ID.me with my current ID. The whole name change issue was fixed in one call once I could actually talk to someone.

Thanks for this suggestion! I'll check out that service. At this point I'm willing to try anything to talk to a real person. Did the agent help you get back payments for the weeks during your name change issue?

Just to add some clarification about the broader issue here - when your benefit year expires, there's a specific process you need to follow: 1. File a new claim (which you tried to do) 2. Complete ID.me verification (where you're stuck) 3. Wait for the new claim to process (7-10 days typically) 4. Continue certifying weekly during this time The name mismatch is blocking you at step 2, which is why you need to speak with an agent. They can either: A) Update your name in the system then have you retry ID.me, or B) Provide an alternative verification method Be aware that even after you resolve this, there's often a 1-2 week gap in payments when transitioning between benefit years. Make sure to keep certifying every week though!

Thank you for explaining the whole process! This helps me understand the bigger picture. I'll definitely keep certifying weekly while I try to get this sorted out. Really appreciate everyone's help!

One more thing nobody mentioned - check your email spam folder! When I had ID issues, NYSDOL actually sent me special instructions but they went to spam. Worth checking just in case!

Just checked spam - nothing from them there unfortunately. But thanks for the suggestion!

@OP - were you able to get through to someone? If you're still stuck, I also had luck emailing my local state assembly member's office. They have special liaisons at unemployment who can sometimes expedite these cases, especially when there's a technical issue like ID.me verification problems.

Update: I tried the Claimyr service that was suggested and finally got through to an agent yesterday! You were right - they were able to update my name in the system and override the ID.me issue. They told me to wait 48 hours and then try filing the new claim again. Fingers crossed it works this time! The agent also said they'd process my missing payment from last week once the new claim goes through. Thanks everyone for your help!
