NY unemployment backpay delay - approved after 10 months but nothing received yet
Finally got approved for NY unemployment benefits after fighting with the system for 10 MONTHS (!!!) Got the official approval notice on Friday, but still haven't received any of my backpay. Does anyone know how long this typically takes? The notice didn't say anything about when to expect payment. I'm desperate at this point - been living off credit cards and family loans for almost a year waiting for this to come through. Do I need to do anything else to trigger the payment or just keep waiting?

Congrats on finally getting approved! Back payments usually hit your account within 3-7 business days after approval. Make sure your payment method (direct deposit or debit card) is set up correctly in your online account. If you don't see anything by next Friday, I'd recommend calling them to check if there's an issue.

•Thank you! My direct deposit info has been in the system since I first applied last year. Guess I'll wait until next week before panicking.

•That's good to hear someone else went through this. Was your payment the full amount you were expecting or did they adjust it?

Actually, backpay processing times vary depending on the reason for your delay and how many weeks you're owed. Since you were waiting 10 months, you probably have a substantial amount coming. Larger backpay amounts sometimes get flagged for additional verification, which can add 2-3 weeks to the process. Did your approval notice mention anything about a 'verification period' or 'staged payments'?

•Nothing about verification periods or staged payments. The letter just said I was approved for benefits from May 2024 through March 2025 and listed the weekly amount. It's about $13,400 total so maybe that's why it's taking longer?

•Yes, that's definitely it. Anything over $10k typically gets an additional review. They're checking for potential fraud since there have been so many scams in the system. It's frustrating but normal - you should still get the full amount.

I waited 9 months and then after approval it took 4 MORE MONTHS to get my money!!!! The system is BROKEN. They kept telling me "2-3 weeks" every time I called. I finally had to contact my state assemblyperson to get it resolved.

•Oh god, I really hope it doesn't take that long. I literally can't wait 4 more months. Did calling actually help at all or was it just the assemblyperson that finally got it moving?

•Calling was USELESS. Hours on hold just to be told to wait. The assemblyperson's office had a direct contact and got it fixed in 2 weeks after I spent months getting nowhere.

This is strange but when I got my backpay notice last month, my benefits showed up exactly 9 days later. But my cousin got his approval the same week and his came in just 2 days. We're both in NY but different counties. I wonder if they process by region or something? Also, double check your payment preferences in your account. My friend thought she had direct deposit set up but actually had the debit card option selected, so she was waiting for a deposit that was never coming while her card was sitting in the mail!

•Just checked again - definitely have direct deposit selected. It's so weird how inconsistent the timing is. Wish they would just give us a clear timeframe in the approval notice!

I was in the same boat last month - approved after a 7-month battle but then no money. Called for days but couldn't get through to anyone. I finally used Claimyr (claimyr.com) and got connected to an agent in 15 minutes instead of spending days on hold. They explained that backpay over $10k has to go through an additional review process that takes 10-15 business days. The agent was able to verify mine was in the final stage and I got paid 3 days later. Check out their demo video if you're struggling to get through: https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE

•Does this actually work? I spent WEEKS trying to reach someone

•Yes, it worked for me. I was skeptical too but after trying to call for days and never getting through, I was desperate. Got connected to an actual NYSDOL agent who could see my file and tell me exactly where my payment was in the process.

•Thank you for this! If I don't see anything by the end of the week I'm definitely going to try it. Just need to know what's happening with my case.

Back pay question...I'm confused about something else. I just got approved too but for fewer weeks than I claimed. Anyone know how to appeal just part of the decision? Don't want to mess up the weeks I did get approved for.

•You can file a partial appeal. Go to your online account, find the determination notice, and select 'Appeal this Decision.' In the form, clearly state you're ONLY appealing the weeks that were denied, and specifically list those dates. Make sure to upload any proof you have for those specific weeks.

UPDATE: Just got my backpay today! It was exactly 11 business days after the approval notice. Full amount as expected, direct deposited to my account. Such a relief after waiting so long. Thanks everyone for your help and advice!
