How to unenroll from unemployment benefits with NYS Department of Labor
I found a full-time job and want to stop my unemployment benefits completely. Do I need to formally unenroll or can I just stop filing my weekly claims? I'm worried if I don't do this properly NYS Department of Labor might think I'm still collecting benefits when I shouldn't be. My last day of work was yesterday and I start the new job Monday. What's the correct way to end my claim?

You don't technically 'unenroll' from unemployment in NY. Just stop filing your weekly claims when you return to work. The system will automatically close your claim after you miss filing for a few weeks. However, you should file one final weekly claim for any days you were unemployed in that week, then stop filing going forward.

•So I don't need to call NYS Department of Labor or anything? I was worried they'd keep my claim open and cause problems later.

Make sure you report your return to work date accurately on your final weekly claim. There's a question about returning to work that you need to answer yes to. This helps NYS Department of Labor properly close out your claim and prevents any future issues.

•This is important! I forgot to do this once and had issues when I needed unemployment again months later.

Wait I'm confused - if I get a temporary job that might only last 2 weeks should I stop filing too? Or do I keep filing since it's not permanent?

•For temporary work, you continue filing but report all your earnings. If you work full-time hours you won't get benefits for those weeks, but your claim stays active. Only stop filing completely if you have permanent full-time work.

I had trouble reaching NYS Department of Labor when I needed to clarify this same situation. Found this service called Claimyr that helped me get through to an actual agent - check out claimyr.com. They have a video demo at https://youtu.be/qyftW-mnTNI that shows how it works. Made it so much easier than trying to call myself.

•It's better to be careful about these things. Properly reporting your return to work prevents overpayment issues down the road.
