How to properly close NY unemployment claim after moving to NH?

I recently moved from New York to New Hampshire and I'm not sure how to properly end my NY unemployment claim. I was collecting benefits because my previous employer in NY reduced my hours, but now I've completely relocated to NH and don't work for that company anymore. Do I need to formally close my NY unemployment claim somehow? Or do I just stop certifying weekly? I don't want to get in trouble later for not properly closing things out. Has anyone done this before?

You should definitely take steps to properly close your claim rather than just stopping certification. Log into your NY.gov account, go to your unemployment dashboard, and look for the option to report that you've moved out of state. There should be a section for reporting changes in your status. You'll likely need to provide your new address and indicate that you've relocated permanently. This helps ensure you don't accidentally receive benefits you're not entitled to, which could create an overpayment situation.

Thanks for the info! I'll check my account tonight. Do you know if there's a specific form number or section name I should look for? The NY unemployment website always confuses me.

While you may not have had issues, this isn't the best advice. Different states handle this differently, and simply stopping certification without notification could potentially create problems down the road, especially if the person ever needs to apply for benefits in either state in the future.

Omg I went through the EXACT same thing in January!!! Moved from Rochester to Vermont and was so confused about what to do with my NY claim. I tried calling but couldn't get through for DAYS. Everyone kept telling me different things - my mom said just stop claiming, my brother said I needed to file some kind of transfer... it was super stressful because I was worried about getting in trouble!

So what did you end up doing? Did you ever get through to someone?

I eventually managed to talk to someone! I used this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that got me through to an agent after I tried for literally a week on my own. They have this video that shows how it works: https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE The agent explained I needed to 1) stop certifying my NY claim immediately 2) submit the change of address form in my NY.gov account and 3) note in the comments section that I had permanently relocated out of state. She also said I should print a copy of the confirmation page for my records.

Did this service actually work? I've been trying to reach NY unemployment for a completely different issue for weeks.

Yes! That's the only way I got through after trying for days. The agent I spoke with was super helpful and walked me through everything step by step.

The correct procedure is twofold: 1. You need to update your address in your NY.gov account immediately. This is required regardless of whether you're still claiming or not. 2. You need to submit what's called a "Request to Close Claim" notice through your online account messaging center. You can find this under "Send a Message" and then select "Close My Claim" as the subject. Merely stopping certification isn't technically sufficient, as your claim remains open in the system for the benefit year. Not properly closing it could potentially cause issues if you need to file in New Hampshire or return to NY within the same benefit year.

DONT TRUST NY UNEMPLOYMENT!!! I moved to CT in 2024 and just stopped claiming. Six months later they said I committed FRAUD because I didn't notify them!!!! Had to pay back $2,300 plus penalties!!! Their system is RIGGED to catch people in technicalities!

This is precisely why proper notification is so important. The system requires formal closure of claims when you relocate permanently out of state. While the communication could certainly be improved on their end, the requirement itself is reasonable from an administrative perspective.

I don't think so - I already have a new job here in NH. I just want to make sure I properly close out my NY claim.

To follow up on my earlier comment, here's the specific process that's current as of 2025: 1. Log into your NY.gov ID account 2. Navigate to My Online Services 3. Select Unemployment Insurance 4. Go to "View My Account" 5. Click on "Update Contact Information" 6. Enter your new address in NH 7. Then go to "Send a Message" 8. Select "Request to Close Claim" from the dropdown menu 9. Explain that you've permanently relocated to NH and have found new employment This ensures you have documentation that you properly notified them. I recommend taking screenshots of the confirmation pages for your records.

This is incredibly helpful! I just followed these steps exactly and was able to update my address and submit the request to close my claim. The system gave me a confirmation number which I saved. Thank you so much for the detailed instructions!

This would actually constitute fraud. You cannot legally collect NY unemployment benefits if you've permanently relocated to another state and are no longer available for work in NY. The requirement for NY benefits includes being ready, willing, and able to work in New York.

Just wanted to update everyone - I followed the advice here and successfully closed my NY unemployment claim! The "Request to Close Claim" option was exactly where you all said it would be. They sent me a confirmation email that my claim has been properly closed. Such a relief to have this taken care of properly. Thanks for all the help!
