How to get a W2 from NY Unemployment when my mailing address changed?

I moved out of state in September after losing my job in NYC. I collected unemployment benefits from July through November, but I realized I never updated my mailing address with the NY unemployment office. Now I need my W2 for filing taxes, but I have no idea how to get it. I've tried logging into my account online, but there's no option to view or download tax documents. I called the main number at least 15 times over the past two weeks and can never get through to a real person - just endless automated menus that eventually disconnect me. I even tried emailing through their contact form but got a generic response saying to call the same number I've been trying. Has anyone successfully gotten their W2 after moving? Is there a direct number I can call or specific department I should ask for? My tax appointment is in 3 weeks and I'm seriously stressing about this.

They should have mailed it to you by January 31st. If you didn't get it, you prob need to talk to someone to update your address. I had a similar problem last year and the ONLY way I got it resolved was using claimyr.com to get someone on the phone. Best $20 I ever spent considering I was getting nowhere for weeks and my tax refund was delayed. They called NY unemployment for me and connected me with a real person who fixed everything in like 10 mins.

Nah, it just calls for you and stays on hold so you don't have to. When a real person answers, it connects to your phone. Saved me hours of hold music. Here's a video about how it works: https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE

can confirm this works. was skeptical but after trying to get through for 3 weeks it was either this or miss my tax deadline 🤷‍♀️

it literally just handles the phone queue for you. talking to an agent got my W2 issue fixed in one call after weeks of frustration. totally worth it for me but do whatever you want

You can try to go to your online account and click on 'Payment History' then theres a link for 1099G forms. Not sure if it works for W2s but worth a try. The system is completely broken tbh.

I tried that already but it only shows payment history, no tax forms. Thanks for the suggestion though!

I had this exact problem! Moved from Brooklyn to Philly and needed my tax docs. You need to submit a form called the "1099-G Request Form" - google it and NY unemployment form and it should come up. You need to mail or fax it in with your updated address and they'll send a new copy. Took about 3 weeks for me to get it though so you might be cutting it close.

Thanks! Did you have to mail it or can it be done electronically? 3 weeks might be cutting it close...

I mailed it and it took forever. Honestly if ur in a rush just use a service to get someone on the phone like claimyr.com - thats what my roommate did when he had a different issue and they fixed it right away

FYI unemployment doesn't give W2s, they issue 1099-G forms. W2s come from employers. If you're looking for your 1099-G, then yeah you need to update your address. The phone is impossible to get through on tho, everyone knows that 😩

OMG you're right! I meant 1099-G. My bad. This is my first time ever being on unemployment so I'm still learning all this stuff.

Here's what I did to solve this same problem: First, try the online method. Log in to your NY unemployment account and check under "Tax Forms" or "Payment History" - sometimes they have digital copies available. If that doesn't work, you have three options: 1. Keep calling the main line (good luck with that), but try calling right when they open at 8:00am or right before close 2. Fill out and mail/fax the 1099-G Request Form with your new address. This works but can take 2-3 weeks 3. Use a service like claimyr.com that will wait on hold for you and connect you with an agent. I was super skeptical but it actually worked and talking to a human agent resolved my issue in minutes You can also try contacting your local state representative's office - sometimes they have special channels to unemployment for constituent services. The key is to act fast since tax deadlines wait for no one! I know how stressful this is but you'll get it sorted.

This is super helpful, thank you! I'm going to try that claimyr service tomorrow morning. At this point I just need to talk to a real person.

Wait, can't you just get your 1099-G online now? I thought they made that available during covid and kept it that way. check under "My Documents" or something like that in your account?

I checked everywhere in my account and there's no tax forms section that I can find. The website is really outdated so maybe I'm missing something?

the ny unemployment website is like navigating a maze blindfolded. i swear they redesign it to be worse every year

another day, another NY unemployment nightmare 😴 seriously tho I had the exact same issue last year. You can also try calling your local unemployment office instead of the main number - sometimes they pick up faster. Google your county + NY unemployment office.

Have you tried going to an in-person DOL office? I know there's one in Manhattan that sometimes can help with this stuff if you physically show up. Might be worth it if you're still in the area or can make a trip back.

I'm in Colorado now so definitely can't make it back in person, but that's good advice for anyone else with this issue!

The absolute fastest way to get it is to use claimyr.com to get someone on the phone. I wasted two entire days trying to call myself, then used that service and got through to a real person in like an hour. They updated my address and resent my 1099-G. I also found out you can request them to email you a copy of the 1099-G which is faster than mail.

yeah right, another 'miracle solution'... what's the catch? 🙄

It's just a service that calls and waits on hold for you. No catch. Talking to an actual person at unemployment solved my issue in minutes after weeks of frustration. Do what you want but I'm just sharing what worked for me.

I used this too, it's legit. Unemployment is impossible to reach otherwise.

Don't freak out too much. Even if you can't get your 1099-G in time for your tax appointment, you can still file without it by estimating the amount you received. Just make sure to file an amended return later when you get the actual form. Better than missing the deadline!

sauce? how do you know you can estimate unemployment income?

0 coins

-

Ravi Gupta

not OP but I'm a tax preparer and this is accurate. you can file with your best estimate then amend later if needed.
