How to file an appeal for unemployment online with NYS Department of Labor
My unemployment claim got denied last week and I need to file an appeal but I'm not sure how to do it online. The notice says I have 30 days but doesn't give clear instructions on where to go on the my.ny.gov website. Has anyone successfully filed an appeal online through the NYS Department of Labor system? I can't find the right section and calling has been impossible.

You need to go to my.ny.gov and log into your unemployment account. Look for the 'Appeals' section in your dashboard - it should show up if you have a disqualification that can be appealed. Make sure you have your determination letter number ready because you'll need to reference it in the appeal form.

•Thanks! I found the appeals section but it's asking for a lot of documentation. Do I need to upload everything at once or can I add more documents later?

The online appeal system is pretty straightforward once you find it. You'll need to write a brief explanation of why you disagree with the determination. Keep it factual and reference specific dates or circumstances. The NYS Department of Labor hearing officer will review everything you submit.

•How long does the appeal process usually take? I'm worried about my bills piling up while I wait for a hearing.

I had trouble reaching anyone at NYS Department of Labor about my appeal status for weeks. Finally used claimyr.com to get through to an actual agent who could explain where my case stood. They have a video demo at https://youtu.be/qyftW-mnTNI that shows how it works. Made the whole process way less stressful than trying to call on my own.

•Never heard of that service before but sounds useful. The phone lines are always jammed when I try calling about my claim.

just went through this last month - the online appeal form is under the determinations section not appeals section which is confusing as hell. typical NYS Department of Labor making things harder than they need to be

•Wait really? I've been looking in the wrong place this whole time. Let me check the determinations section now.

Good luck with your appeal! The system is definitely not user-friendly but once you submit it online you should get a confirmation email with your appeal number.
