How to delete unemployment account - NYS Department of Labor won't let me close it
I've been trying to figure out how to delete my unemployment account on my.ny.gov for weeks now and there's literally no option anywhere. I finished my claim back in August when I got a new job, but the account is still active and I keep getting emails about filing weekly claims even though I'm not supposed to. I've looked everywhere in the account settings and there's no delete or close account button. Has anyone successfully closed their NYS Department of Labor unemployment account? This is driving me crazy because I don't want any issues if I ever need to file again in the future.

You actually can't delete your my.ny.gov account because it's tied to multiple state services, not just unemployment. What you need to do is make sure your unemployment claim is properly closed. Log into your account and check if your claim status shows as 'closed' or 'exhausted.' If you're still getting weekly filing reminders, your claim might not be properly terminated.

•I checked and it says 'claim exhausted' but I'm still getting the emails every week. Should I call NYS Department of Labor to make sure it's really closed?

The weekly reminder emails are automated and sometimes continue even after your claim is properly closed. You can unsubscribe from those emails by going to your notification preferences in your my.ny.gov account settings. Look for 'Manage Email Notifications' and turn off the unemployment-related alerts. Your account will remain dormant but accessible if you need to file a new claim later.

•Wait, so keeping the account open is actually better? I was worried it would mess things up if I needed unemployment again.

•Yes, keeping your my.ny.gov account is recommended. If you need to file for unemployment in the future, you can reopen a claim using the same account rather than creating a new one.

I had this exact problem and couldn't reach anyone at NYS Department of Labor for weeks. The phone lines are always busy and they never responded to my messages. Finally used this service called Claimyr that got me through to an actual agent in like 10 minutes. They confirmed my claim was closed and helped me turn off the email notifications. Check out claimyr.com - they have a video demo at https://youtu.be/qyftW-mnTNI that shows how it works.

THE EMAILS NEVER STOP!! I've been getting them for 6 months now even though I'm working full time. NYS Department of Labor customer service is absolutely useless - they put you on hold for hours then hang up on you. This whole system is broken.

You don't want to delete it anyway trust me. My cousin deleted her whole my.ny.gov account thinking it would solve this and then when she needed unemployment again she had to create everything from scratch and it was a nightmare with verification

I went through this same frustration! What worked for me was logging into my account and going to the "Contact Us" section, then selecting "Report a Problem with My Account" and explaining that I'm employed and want to stop receiving weekly filing reminders. They actually responded within a few days and turned off the notifications. Also make sure your employment status is updated in your profile - there's a section where you can mark yourself as "employed" which should help reduce some of the automated emails.

•This is really helpful! I didn't know there was an employment status section in the profile. @Atticus Domingo you might want to try this approach - it sounds like updating your employment status and using the Report "a Problem option" could be more effective than trying to delete the whole account. Thanks for sharing what actually worked!

•@Ethan Campbell Thanks for this detailed solution! I ve'been dealing with the same issue for months and getting nowhere with the phone lines. Just tried your approach and found the employment status section - I had no idea that even existed. Already submitted a report explaining my situation. Fingers crossed this finally stops those weekly reminders! Really appreciate you taking the time to share what actually worked instead of just complaining about the system.

I had the same issue and found a solution that worked! Go to your my.ny.gov account and look for "Notification Preferences" or "Email Settings" - it's usually buried in the account settings menu. There should be specific checkboxes for unemployment-related notifications that you can uncheck. Also, make sure to update your employment status in your profile to "Currently Employed" if you haven't already. This combination stopped the weekly emails for me within about a week. The account will stay dormant but ready to use if you ever need it again, which is actually better than trying to delete it completely.

•@Ravi Gupta This is exactly what I needed! I ve'been so frustrated trying to figure this out. Just logged in and found both the notification preferences and the employment status section - you re'right, they re'pretty buried in the settings. Updated my status to Currently "Employed and" unchecked all the unemployment email notifications. Really hoping this finally stops those annoying weekly reminders. Thanks for the step-by-step guidance!

I'm dealing with this exact same problem right now! Been employed for 3 months but still getting those weekly filing reminders. Reading through all these responses, it sounds like the key is updating your employment status and adjusting notification preferences rather than trying to delete the account entirely. @Ravi Gupta and @Ethan Campbell - thanks for the detailed steps! I'm going to try both the "Report a Problem" approach and updating my notification settings. It's reassuring to know that keeping the account active is actually the better option for future claims. Has anyone had success with how long it takes for the emails to actually stop once you make these changes?

•@Zoe Alexopoulos I just went through this process last month! After updating my employment status and turning off the unemployment notifications, it took about 10-14 days for the weekly emails to completely stop. The first week I still got one reminder, but then they stopped coming. I think there s'a delay in their system updating. Definitely try both the notification settings and the Report "a Problem method" that @Ethan Campbell mentioned - I did both just to be safe. The peace of mind was worth it, and now I know my account is there if I ever need it again without all the spam emails!

I just went through this same headache a few months ago! The trick is definitely NOT trying to delete the account - you'll just create more problems for yourself. What finally worked for me was a combination of things: 1) Update your employment status to "Currently Employed" in your profile settings, 2) Go to notification preferences and uncheck all unemployment-related emails, and 3) Use the "Contact Us" feature to report that you're employed and want to stop weekly reminders. It took about 2 weeks for the emails to completely stop, but they did eventually. The account staying active is actually a good thing - makes it way easier if you ever need benefits again. Don't waste time trying to call them, their phone system is a nightmare. The online approach is much more effective!

•@Hannah Flores This is such a comprehensive solution - thanks for breaking it down into clear steps! I m'a newcomer here and have been struggling with this exact issue for weeks. It s'really helpful to see that multiple people have had success with this approach rather than trying to delete the account. I had no idea there were so many different settings to update. Going to try all three steps you mentioned today. Really appreciate everyone sharing their experiences here - this thread has been way more helpful than anything I could find on the official NYS DOL website!

As a newcomer to this community, I'm so grateful to have found this thread! I've been dealing with this exact same issue for about a month now - got a new job in September but those weekly filing reminders just keep coming. Reading through everyone's experiences here has been incredibly helpful. It sounds like the consensus is to keep the account active but update the employment status and notification preferences rather than trying to delete it. I'm definitely going to try the three-step approach that @Hannah Flores outlined: updating employment status, unchecking notification preferences, and using the "Contact Us" feature. It's reassuring to know that this is a common problem and that there are actual solutions that work. Thanks to everyone who shared their successful strategies - this has been way more useful than hours of searching the official website!

•@Jamal Washington Welcome to the community! I m'new here too and just went through this exact same frustrating experience. It s'amazing how helpful everyone has been with sharing actual solutions instead of just venting about the problem. I followed the advice from @Hannah Flores and @Ravi Gupta about updating employment status and notification settings, and I m happy to'report it worked! Took about 10 days for the emails to stop completely. The key insight that everyone here seems to agree on is that keeping the account active is actually the smart move - saves you so much hassle if you ever need to file again. Good luck with getting those annoying reminders turned off!

I'm new to this community and just want to say thank you to everyone who shared their solutions here! I've been struggling with this exact same problem for over two months now - been employed since October but those weekly filing emails just won't stop. After reading through all the helpful advice here, I realize I was going about this completely wrong by trying to figure out how to delete the account. The step-by-step approaches from @Hannah Flores, @Ravi Gupta, and @Ethan Campbell make so much sense. I just updated my employment status to "Currently Employed," unchecked all the unemployment notification preferences, and submitted a "Report a Problem" request explaining my situation. Fingers crossed this finally resolves the issue! It's such a relief to find a community where people actually share what worked instead of just complaining. This thread should honestly be pinned somewhere - it's way more helpful than anything on the official NYS DOL website.
