How long does it take to get on unemployment in NY - filed claim 2 weeks ago still waiting
I submitted my initial unemployment claim through my.ny.gov about 2 weeks ago and I'm still waiting to hear anything back from NYS Department of Labor. My claim status just says 'pending' and I haven't received any correspondence or payment yet. I lost my job at the beginning of January due to layoffs at my company. Is this normal? How long should I expect to wait before I start getting benefits? I'm starting to get really worried about paying my rent next month.

The typical processing time for NYS Department of Labor unemployment claims is usually 1-3 weeks from the date you file, but it can take longer if there are any issues that need review. Since you filed 2 weeks ago, you're still within the normal timeframe. Make sure you're filing your weekly claims even while your initial claim is pending - you won't get paid for weeks you don't certify. Check your my.ny.gov account for any messages or requests for additional information.

•Thanks! I have been doing my weekly claims. Should I be worried that it's taking this long or is 2 weeks still pretty normal?

mine took almost 4 weeks last year when i got laid off, no explanation why just had to wait it out. keep filing those weekly claims though or you'll lose those weeks forever

If your claim goes into adjudication, that's when delays really start happening. That's when they need to verify something about your employment or reason for separation. You can try calling NYS Department of Labor but honestly the wait times are terrible. I had better luck using a service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) to get through to an actual agent when I had issues. They have a video demo at https://youtu.be/qyftW-mnTNI that shows how it works. Saved me hours of trying to call myself.

•Never heard of that service before. Did it actually help you get answers faster than calling directly?

•Yeah, they connected me to an agent within like 15 minutes when I couldn't get through on my own after days of trying. Was definitely worth it for my situation.

The NYS Department of Labor system is SO slow right now. I've been waiting 3 weeks for my claim to get approved and every time I call I just get hung up on after being on hold forever. This is ridiculous when people need money to survive!
