How long do you have to claim unemployment in NY after losing your job?

I got laid off from my warehouse job two weeks ago and I'm just now finding out about unemployment benefits. My coworker said there's a deadline for when you can apply but he wasn't sure what it is. How long do you have to claim unemployment after you lose your job? I'm worried I might have already missed some kind of window. Also does the time limit affect how much you can get?

You should file as soon as possible! There's no strict deadline for filing your initial claim, but your benefits are only paid from the date you file, not from when you lost your job. So those two weeks you waited? You can't get paid for those weeks. The sooner you file with NYS Department of Labor, the better.

Oh no, so I already lost two weeks of benefits? That's like $600 I can't get back. I had no idea it worked that way.

File immediately on the NYS Department of Labor website. You have up to one year from your separation date to file an initial claim, but like the other person said, you only get paid from your filing date forward. Don't wait another day - go to labor.ny.gov and start the application process right now.

Wait I thought you only had 30 days? My brother told me there was some kind of 30 day rule...

Your brother might be thinking of the appeal deadline. You have 30 days to appeal if your claim gets denied, but filing the initial claim you have much longer.

I made the same mistake and waited almost a month before filing. Lost out on over $1000 in benefits that I'll never see. The NYS Department of Labor system is so confusing - they should make this clearer when you get laid off!

I had trouble getting through to NYS Department of Labor on the phone when I needed to check my claim status last month. If you run into issues with your application or need to speak to someone, I found this service called Claimyr that actually got me connected to an agent. Check out claimyr.com - they have a video demo at https://youtu.be/qyftW-mnTNI that shows how it works. Way better than sitting on hold for hours.
