How does globalization affect unemployment - lost my manufacturing job to overseas

I've been working in manufacturing here in upstate NY for 15 years and just got laid off because my company moved production overseas. Filing for unemployment with NYS Department of Labor but I'm wondering if this is happening to other people too. Does globalization really affect unemployment rates this much? My whole department got cut and they said it was due to cheaper labor costs abroad. Has anyone else dealt with this kind of situation when filing their claim? I'm worried about finding another manufacturing job since so many companies seem to be moving operations out of the country.

Sorry to hear about your job loss. Yes, globalization has definitely impacted manufacturing employment in NY. When filing your unemployment claim, make sure to indicate that your separation was due to a permanent layoff/plant closure. This should qualify you for regular UI benefits. You might also want to look into Trade Adjustment Assistance (TAA) if your job loss was specifically due to foreign trade - it can provide additional benefits and retraining opportunities beyond regular NYS Department of Labor unemployment.

Thanks for the info about TAA. How do I find out if my company's closure qualifies for that program? Do I apply through NYS Department of Labor or is it separate?

same thing happened to me 2 years ago at a textile plant in rochester. globalization definitely hurts local jobs but at least unemployment benefits helped me get by while retraining. the job search requirements with nys department of labor were actually helpful because they made me expand what kind of work i was looking for

What kind of retraining did you do? I'm 42 and worried about starting over in a completely different field.

If you're having trouble getting through to NYS Department of Labor to discuss your claim or ask about additional programs, I had success using a service called Claimyr (claimyr.com). They help you actually reach a live agent instead of getting stuck in the phone system. There's a video demo at https://youtu.be/qyftW-mnTNI that shows how it works. Might be worth checking out since you'll probably have questions about your benefits while job searching in this tough market.

Is that legit? I've been trying to call NYS Department of Labor for a week about my adjudication status and keep getting disconnected.

The whole system is rigged against American workers!! Companies get tax breaks to move jobs overseas while we get unemployment checks that barely cover rent. Globalization is just corporate greed disguised as economic policy. At least NY unemployment benefits are better than some states but it's still not enough to live on long term.

I think there are pros and cons to globalization but losing manufacturing jobs is definitely a real problem in our area. Make sure you're keeping track of all your job search activities for your weekly claims - NYS Department of Labor requires detailed records now.
