NYS Department of Labor claim approved during recession - when does output fall and unemployment increase?

Just got my unemployment claim approved after being laid off from my manufacturing job last month. My supervisor mentioned that times when output is falling and unemployment is increasing are exactly when people like me need these benefits most. I'm trying to understand the economic patterns behind layoffs - does anyone know more about how economic downturns affect NYS Department of Labor claim volumes? My weekly claim amount is $438 and I'm wondering if this timing means I'll have trouble finding work soon.

You're describing recessionary periods or economic contractions. When output falls and unemployment rises, it typically indicates the economy is entering or already in a recession. NYS Department of Labor sees massive spikes in claims during these times - like in 2008-2009 and early 2020. The good news is your claim is already approved, so focus on your job search requirements and weekly certifications.

Thanks for explaining that. Should I be more aggressive with my job search now, or do the NYS Department of Labor requirements stay the same during recessions?

same thing happened to me in 2008... was out of work for 11 months because EVERYONE was getting laid off. the job market was terrible but at least unemployment benefits kept me afloat

During economic downturns, NYS Department of Labor typically extends benefit periods and may relax some job search requirements temporarily. Make sure you're documenting all your job search activities properly though - they still audit these things even during recessions.

wait I'm confused about this whole output falling thing?? I thought unemployment just happened when companies ran out of money or something. Is there like an official measurement for when this stuff happens??

Economic output is measured by GDP (Gross Domestic Product). When GDP falls for two consecutive quarters, that's technically a recession. During these periods, unemployment rates spike because companies cut costs by reducing their workforce.

I had such a hard time getting through to NYS Department of Labor during the last recession - their phone lines were constantly jammed. If you need to speak with someone about your claim, I recently discovered this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that actually gets you connected to agents. They have a demo video at https://youtu.be/qyftW-mnTNI showing how it works. Saved me hours of calling.

Interesting, I'll check that out if I run into issues with my weekly claims. The online system seems to be working fine for now though.

THE WHOLE SYSTEM IS RIGGED ANYWAY!!! They make it impossible to reach anyone and then act surprised when people can't navigate their bureaucratic maze. These economic cycles just give them more excuses to deny claims and make people jump through hoops.

I feel you on the frustration but honestly the system worked pretty well for me when I was unemployed last year
