Filed for NYS Department of Labor benefits after factory automation - do you think robots will cause unemployment in the future why or why not

Just got laid off from my manufacturing job because they brought in automated equipment to replace half our line. Filed my unemployment claim with NYS Department of Labor yesterday and it got me thinking - do you think robots will cause unemployment in the future why or why not? I mean I'm 47 years old and feel like I'm competing with machines now. My claim is still pending but I'm wondering if this is just the beginning. Anyone else lose their job to automation recently?

I'm sorry about your job loss. Regarding your NYS Department of Labor claim, make sure you're doing your weekly certifications on time. As for automation, it's definitely changing the job market but history shows technology usually creates new types of jobs even as it eliminates others. Focus on retraining opportunities - NYS Department of Labor has partnerships with workforce development programs that can help with skills for emerging fields.

Thanks for the advice about weekly claims. I'm definitely interested in retraining but worried about starting over at my age. Did you go through something similar?

Same thing happened to my whole department last year. Robots took over packaging and they cut 15 people. The good news is NYS Department of Labor approved my benefits pretty quickly since it was clearly a layoff not termination for cause. But yeah automation is scary - feels like every job could be next.

If you're having trouble reaching NYS Department of Labor about your claim status, I found this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that helps you get through to actual agents. They have a video demo at https://youtu.be/qyftW-mnTNI showing how it works. Really helped when my claim got stuck in adjudication.

robots are taking over everything now its not just manufacturing. self checkout at stores, chatbots for customer service, even fast food is getting automated. i think we're heading for mass unemployment unless the government does something

But don't you think new jobs always come up? Like people who maintain the robots or program them? I'm trying to stay optimistic while I'm on unemployment myself.

The whole system is rigged anyway! These corporations get tax breaks to automate then we have to pay for unemployment benefits for the workers they displaced. NYS Department of Labor should make companies pay more into the unemployment fund when they automate jobs. It's not fair that taxpayers foot the bill.

That's actually an interesting point about funding. I never thought about who pays when automation causes layoffs.

honestly i think robots will eventually do most jobs but it might take longer than people think. like my dad lost his job to a machine in the 80s but found work in maintenance. technology moves fast but people adapt too i guess
