how does ai affect unemployment - NYS Department of Labor claim concerns about job displacement
I just got laid off from my data entry job because they're using AI now to do what I was doing. Filed for unemployment with NYS Department of Labor but I'm really worried about finding another job since AI seems to be taking over everything. Has anyone else dealt with getting unemployment benefits after being replaced by automation? I'm scared there won't be any jobs left by the time my benefits run out. The job search requirements are stressing me out because what if AI can do all the jobs I'm qualified for?

I understand your concerns about AI, but the good news is you qualify for regular unemployment benefits regardless of the reason for your layoff. NYS Department of Labor doesn't differentiate between layoffs due to automation versus other business reasons. Focus on meeting your weekly claim requirements and job search activities. There are still many roles that require human skills - customer service, healthcare, skilled trades, creative work. Consider this an opportunity to retrain or pivot to a field less susceptible to automation.

•Thanks, that's reassuring about the benefits at least. Do you know if NYS Department of Labor has any retraining programs for people in my situation?

You might want to look into the WIOA (Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act) programs through NYS Department of Labor. They offer training assistance for displaced workers, which could include people affected by technological changes. You can ask about this when you do your required job search activities or contact your local career center.

•I had trouble reaching NYS Department of Labor about training programs last month. If you're having issues getting through on the phone, I found this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that helps you actually connect with an agent. They have a video demo at https://youtu.be/qyftW-mnTNI showing how it works. Made it so much easier to get real answers about my options.

AI taking jobs is the new normal unfortunately. At least you can collect while you figure things out. I've been on unemployment twice in the past three years because of automation and downsizing. The system isn't really designed for this kind of mass displacement but what can you do.

•Wait, does this mean my job could be next?? I work in accounting and I keep hearing about AI doing taxes and bookkeeping. Should I be worried about my position? How do I even prepare for something like this?

Same thing happened to my cousin in customer service last year, they replaced half the call center with chatbots. She managed to find something else eventually but it took like 6 months. Just keep doing your weekly certifications and job searches, that's all you can really do right now.
