Got a payment coupon from NYS Department of Labor - what is this thing?
I've been getting my weekly unemployment payments by direct deposit for the past 2 months without any issues. Today I got this weird paper thing in the mail called a 'payment coupon' from NYS Department of Labor. It has my name and some numbers on it but I have no idea what I'm supposed to do with it. My payments are still coming in normally so I'm confused why they sent this. Has anyone else gotten one of these? Do I need to do something with it or can I just ignore it?

A payment coupon is usually sent when there's been some kind of change to your payment method or if they need to verify your banking information. Check your my.ny.gov account to see if there are any pending issues that need your attention. Sometimes they send these if your direct deposit got rejected for any reason.

•I checked my account and don't see any issues listed. My last payment came through fine on Tuesday. Should I call them to ask about it?

Payment coupons are NYS Department of Labor's backup method when direct deposit fails. You take the coupon to any bank that accepts state warrants and they'll cash it for you. Don't ignore it - if they sent you a coupon, it means your regular payment method isn't working for some reason. Contact your bank first to make sure your account is still active and the routing numbers are correct.

•This is exactly right. I work at a bank and we see these unemployment coupons all the time when people's direct deposits bounce back. Usually it's because the account was closed or there was a problem with the routing number.

OMG this happened to me and I PANICKED thinking I did something wrong! Turns out my credit union changed their routing number and didn't tell me. I had to update my banking info on the NY unemployment site and everything went back to normal. But yeah, definitely cash that coupon because that's your payment for this week!

If you're having trouble getting through to NYS Department of Labor to ask about this, I had good luck using Claimyr (claimyr.com) when I needed to talk to someone about a payment issue. They have a video demo at https://youtu.be/qyftW-mnTNI that shows how it works. Saved me hours of calling and getting busy signals.

•Thanks, I might try that if I can't figure this out. Do they charge you to help get through?

•Yeah there's a fee but it was worth it for me since I couldn't get through any other way. Way less stressful than calling over and over.

Don't cash it yet! Sometimes they send these by mistake and if you cash it and then your direct deposit also goes through you'll get an overpayment notice later. Check with them first!

•That's not really how it works. If they sent a coupon, the direct deposit was already cancelled for that payment. The coupon IS your payment, not an extra payment.
