Does NYS Department of Labor unemployment benefits work the same way in different states?

I'm moving from New York to another state next month and I'm currently receiving unemployment benefits through NYS Department of Labor. My weekly claim amount is $347 and I still have about 12 weeks left on my claim. Does anyone know if I can transfer my NYS unemployment to the new state or do I have to start over completely? I've been looking online but the information is confusing. I work in tech sales and my job search has been going okay here but I'm worried about losing my benefits during the move.

You can't transfer NYS Department of Labor benefits to another state, but you can continue receiving them if you follow the proper procedures. You need to notify NYS Department of Labor about your move immediately and continue filing your weekly claims. The key is that you have to remain available for work and continue your job search in both states. You'll also need to register with the workforce agency in your new state.

Thank you! Do I need to update my address with NYS Department of Labor before I move or after? And what happens if I find a job in the new state - do I still report that to NYS?

yeah this happened to my brother last year when he moved to florida. he kept getting his nys checks but had to do the job search stuff in both places which was a pain. make sure you keep all your records because they might ask for proof later

Actually, the interstate benefit transfer process can be tricky. You need to file a change of address with NYS Department of Labor through your online account and inform them of your move date. Continue filing weekly claims as normal, but you must register for work search activities in your new state within your first week there. If you have trouble reaching NYS Department of Labor directly about this (their phone lines are always swamped), I used a service called Claimyr at claimyr.com that helped me get through to an actual agent. They have a video demo at https://youtu.be/qyftW-mnTNI that explains how it works. Really saved me hours of trying to call myself.

I'll check that out - I've been trying to call for days about this move situation and keep getting disconnected. Thanks for the tip!

No, you continue with the state where your original claim was filed (NYS in this case) until that claim period ends. Then if you still need benefits, you'd file a new claim in whatever state you're residing in.

The most important thing is DON'T let your weekly claims lapse during the move! I made that mistake when I relocated and it took weeks to straighten out with NYS Department of Labor. Even if you're busy packing and moving, you have to file that weekly claim on time or you'll lose those weeks permanently.

This is exactly why the unemployment system needs to be modernized. Why should someone lose benefits just because they're trying to find better opportunities in a different state? The whole thing is bureaucratic nonsense.
