Can I collect unemployment if I move to another state while on NYS Department of Labor benefits?

I've been collecting unemployment benefits through NYS Department of Labor for about 6 weeks now and my lease is up next month. My partner got a job offer in Philadelphia and we're thinking about moving there together. I'm worried about losing my benefits if I relocate while still unemployed. Has anyone moved out of state while collecting NYS unemployment? Do I need to notify NYS Department of Labor before I move or can I just update my address and keep filing my weekly claims from Pennsylvania? I really can't afford to lose these benefits right now since I haven't found work yet.

You can definitely collect NYS unemployment benefits while living in another state! The key thing is you need to notify NYS Department of Labor about your address change and make sure you're still available for work. When you file your weekly claims, you'll need to indicate you're willing to accept suitable work opportunities. Some people think moving disqualifies you but that's not true - you just need to remain actively seeking employment and available to work.

That's such a relief to hear! Do I need to change my job search requirements or anything like that when I move?

yeah but dont they ask if you moved during your weekly claim? i thought i saw that question somewhere

Yes, there's a question about changes to your contact information. You should answer honestly about the move and update your address in your my.ny.gov account. The important thing is demonstrating you're still able and available for work in your new location.

I went through this exact situation last year when I moved from Buffalo to North Carolina! You absolutely can keep collecting NYS unemployment benefits. Just make sure to update your address immediately in the system and be prepared to show you're actively job searching in your new area. I had to submit my job search log showing I was applying to positions in NC and that was perfectly fine with NYS Department of Labor.

Did you have any issues with the weekly certification process or did everything go smoothly after you updated your address?

Everything went smoothly once I updated everything. The only hiccup I had was when I tried calling NYS Department of Labor to ask a question about job search requirements and couldn't get through for days. I ended up using this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that helped me actually reach an agent. They have a video demo at https://youtu.be/qyftW-mnTNI showing how it works. Made it so much easier to get answers about my specific situation.

The system is SO confusing about this stuff. Like why don't they just clearly explain what happens when you move??? I've been too scared to even update my address because I don't want to trigger some kind of review or investigation into my claim. What if they think I'm trying to commit fraud or something?

I understand the anxiety but not updating your address could actually cause more problems than updating it. NYS Department of Labor needs accurate contact information for important notices. Moving states while unemployed is completely normal and legal - just be transparent about it.

This whole unemployment system is a joke anyway. They make it seem like you're doing something wrong just for trying to survive. I've had nothing but problems with NYS Department of Labor since day one.

Good luck with the move! Philly is a great city and there should be lots of job opportunities there.

I moved from Albany to Vermont while collecting NYS unemployment and it was totally fine! The most important thing is to update your address in the system right away and make sure you can still receive mail from NYS Department of Labor. When you do your weekly certifications, you'll need to show you're actively looking for work in Pennsylvania. Keep detailed records of your job applications because they might ask for them. Also, make sure your phone number stays the same or update that too so they can reach you if needed. The benefits will continue as long as you meet all the other requirements - being able to work, available for work, and actively seeking employment. Don't stress too much about it, interstate moves happen all the time!

Thank you so much for sharing your experience! This is exactly what I needed to hear. Did you have to do anything special with Vermont's Department of Labor or was it just a matter of keeping everything updated with NYS? I'm wondering if there's any coordination between states that I should be aware of.

I'm in a similar situation and this is really helpful! One thing I'm curious about - did you have to prove you were looking for work specifically in Vermont, or could you apply to remote jobs based in New York? I'm wondering how flexible they are about the job search requirements when you move out of state.

@Lydia Santiago This is super helpful, thanks! I m'actually in a similar boat and wondering about the job search requirements too. When you moved to Vermont, did you have to limit your job search to Vermont-based positions, or were you able to apply to remote work opportunities that might be based in other states? I m'trying to figure out how strict NYS is about the geographic scope of your job search when you re'living out of state.

I actually just went through this process a few months ago when I moved from Rochester to Denver! You can absolutely keep collecting NYS unemployment benefits while living in another state. The key is being proactive about updating your information. Log into your my.ny.gov account and update your address as soon as you move. You'll also want to make sure your phone number and email are current so they can reach you if needed. During your weekly certifications, just be honest about your new location and continue showing that you're actively job searching in Pennsylvania. I kept detailed records of all my job applications in Colorado and never had any issues with NYS Department of Labor. The benefits continued without interruption as long as I met all the usual requirements - being able and available for work, and actively seeking employment. Don't let the move stress you out too much, it's more common than you'd think!

@Emma Wilson That s'really reassuring to hear from someone who just went through this! I m'curious about one thing - when you were doing your weekly certifications from Denver, did NYS ask any follow-up questions about your out-of-state move, or did they pretty much take it at face value once you updated your address? I m'just wondering if there s'any additional scrutiny or paperwork when you re'filing from a different state.

I'm planning a similar move soon and this thread has been incredibly helpful! Just wanted to add that I called NYS Department of Labor directly about this situation and they confirmed what everyone is saying - you can definitely collect benefits while living out of state as long as you update your address and continue meeting all the eligibility requirements. The rep I spoke with emphasized that the most important thing is being honest and transparent about your move in your weekly certifications. They also mentioned that you should be prepared to provide documentation of your job search activities in your new state if requested. It sounds like as long as you're genuinely looking for work and available to accept suitable employment, the geographic location isn't a barrier to continuing benefits. Good luck with your move to Philly!

That's great that you were able to get through to someone at NYS Department of Labor directly! I've been trying to call them for weeks about a different issue and can never get through. Do you have any tips for the best time to call or did you just get lucky? Also, did they mention anything about how long the job search documentation needs to be kept or what format they prefer if they do request it?

@Saleem Vaziri That s'really helpful that you were able to speak with someone directly! I ve'been trying to reach NYS Department of Labor for a different question and it s'been impossible. Did you call at a specific time of day or use a particular number? Also curious - when they mentioned being prepared to provide job search documentation, did they give you any specifics about what format they prefer or how detailed it needs to be? I want to make sure I m'keeping the right kind of records just in case they ask for them after I move.

I moved from Syracuse to Florida while collecting NYS unemployment about 8 months ago and everything worked out fine! The process was pretty straightforward - I updated my address in the my.ny.gov system right before I moved and made sure to answer all the weekly certification questions honestly. The key thing that helped me was keeping really detailed records of my job search activities in Florida. I used a simple spreadsheet with columns for company name, position, date applied, and method of application. NYS never actually asked to see it, but having that documentation gave me peace of mind. One tip - make sure you can still access your NY.gov account from your new state, sometimes there can be weird technical glitches with state websites when you're accessing from out of state. I also kept my NY phone number for the first few months just to avoid any potential communication issues. The benefits continued without any problems as long as I kept certifying weekly and showing I was actively looking for work. Moving while on unemployment is totally normal and legal - don't let it stress you out too much!

@Noah Torres This is so helpful, thank you! I m'about to make the same move and your spreadsheet idea is brilliant. I ve'been keeping loose track of my applications but nothing that organized. Quick question - when you say you kept your NY phone number for a few months, did you eventually change it or are you still using it? I m'wondering if there are any advantages to keeping the NY number long-term versus switching to a local number right away. Also, did you have to register with Florida s'job services or anything like that, or was it purely just continuing with NYS requirements?
