Does NY unemployment still exist or was it just a pandemic thing?

I got laid off from my warehouse job last week and my buddy told me to apply for unemployment benefits. But I thought that was just a COVID thing that ended? I never had to use it before and I'm confused if regular NY unemployment is still a thing or if that all stopped when the pandemic programs ended. The website looks active but I wasn't sure if it's worth my time applying or if I should just focus on finding a new job ASAP. Anyone know if regular unemployment benefits are still available in 2023?

Yes unemployment is definitely still a thing! It existed long before covid and will continue to exist. Covid just added extra $ on top of regular benefits for a while. You should absolutely apply right away - you paid into the system while working, so you deserve the benefits while looking for new work.

Oh wow I had no idea. Thanks! Do I need to have worked a certain amount of time to qualify?

Yeah, you need to have worked for a certain period and earned enough in your "base period" - usually the first 4 of the last 5 completed calendar quarters before you file. If you've had steady work for the past year you'll probably qualify.

Just to add - apply IMMEDIATELY even if you're not sure you qualify. The system can take forever to process claims and they don't backdate unless you have a good reason for delay.

When I got laid off in April I couldn't get through to anyone on the phone for THREE WEEKS. Was going crazy trying to fix an issue with my claim. Finally found this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that got me a callback with a real agent from unemployment! Seriously was the best money I ever spent cuz talking to an actual human got my case fixed right away. Check out their demo video if you need help: https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE

It does work. They basically just keep calling for you and then transfer when they get a real person. Nothing sketchy, just saves you from the endless hold music torture 🎵😵

Unemployment def still exists! I'm on it right now lol. The special pandemic programs (PUA etc) ended but regular unemployment insurance is permanent. Apply online ASAP and make sure you claim every week even while waiting for approval.

Yup! Regular unemployment is still around. The basic program has been around since like the Great Depression. What ended was just all the special pandemic stuff and extra money. File RIGHT AWAY because there's a one week waiting period before benefits start and they won't backpay you for weeks you didn't claim.

Thanks for the info! Do you know roughly how much of my normal salary I would get? Just trying to budget while job hunting.

In NY its roughly 50% of your average weekly wage, up to the maximum weekly benefit amount (which is around $504). So if you made $1000/week, you'd get about $500, but if you made $1500/week, you'd still only get the $504 max.

YES IT STILL EXISTS! But honestly the system is BROKEN AF 🤬 Been waiting 7 weeks for my claim to process and nobody answers the damn phone. Definitely apply but be prepared for a nightmare experience.

Try Claimyr.com - it'll get you through to an actual person instead of that awful hold music. Only way I finally got my claim fixed.

Unemployment Insurance is a permanent program, not just for COVID. As someone who's experienced with the NY unemployment system, here's what you need to know: 1) Apply immediately after job loss - there's a 1-week waiting period before benefits start 2) You must have earned enough wages in your "base period" to qualify (generally need 2+ quarters of work history) 3) You need to certify EVERY WEEK to receive benefits - even while waiting for approval 4) Current max benefit is about $504/week in NY 5) Benefits typically last 26 weeks 6) You MUST be actively seeking work and documenting your job search efforts 7) The phone system is notoriously overwhelmed - if you need to speak with someone, I recommend using claimyr.com which helped me get through after weeks of trying 8) Set up direct deposit right away for faster payments The system can be frustrating but stick with it - that's money you're entitled to while job searching!

Can confirm all of this is 100% accurate - especially the part about certifying weekly. If you miss even one week, it's a HUGE headache to fix.

Regular unemployment is still going strong. Theres actually been unemployment insurance since like the 1930s. The COVID programs that ended were just the temporary expanded benefits like the extra $300/week and benefits for gig workers.

I literally just got my first unemployment payment yesterday! But I had to wait almost 5 weeks for it to process 😫 Apply ASAP and be prepared to wait.

Wow 5 weeks is a long time! Did they backpay you for those weeks at least?

Evelyn Rivera

•

Yes they did backpay, but only because I certified every single week while waiting. If you skip certifying even one week, you won't get paid for that week!

NY unemployment is alive and well my friend! Just make sure u answer all the questions honestly and keep detailed records of your job search. They sometimes do random audits where they ask for proof that you've been looking for work.
