Can't access NY unemployment account due to old email - system says no account found
Been trying to reopen my claim after getting laid off last month, but I'm completely locked out of the system. I changed my email provider about 6 months ago and don't have access to my old account anymore. Every single time I try to log in with my username, the system tells me "no account found" even though I KNOW I had an active claim last year. I've tried the password reset option but since it sends verification to my old email, I'm stuck in this stupid loop. Already tried calling them 8 times this week but can't get through to anyone. Should I just create a brand new account and start from scratch? Will that mess up my previous history? This is so frustrating, especially since I'm already behind on rent. Anyone dealt with this before?

Do NOT create a new account!!! That will flag your SSN for fraud and youll be waiting for months to get it sorted out. Keep calling until you get through to a human.

•Ugh that's what I was afraid of. Any tips on how to actually reach a person? I feel like I'm just wasting my time on hold all day.

•Yeah the system is totally broken. Try calling right when they open, thats usually the best time to get through.

I had the EXACT same issue last fall. Was pulling my hair out trying to reach someone. Finally used a service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) to get through to an agent. They stayed on hold for me and called me back when an agent was on the line. Talking to an agent got my $ unlocked so fast when they fixed my account access issues. Check out this video to see how it works: https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE

•I was skeptical too but it actually worked for me. They just dial for you and stay on hold so you dont have to. When an agent picks up they connect you. Saved me from wasting all day on the phone.

•wait hold up - does this actually work or is it just the usual BS? the ny unemployment phone system is absolutely brutal

•It worked for me 🤷♀️ Got through to someone who fixed my account access. You still have to deal with the agent yourself, they just handle the hold time.

Have you tried using the password recovery option? Sometimes it gives you alternative ways to verify your identity besides email.

The NY unemployment system is SUCH trash. I had a similar issue and spent 3 weeks trying to fix it. Your best bet is to keep calling and hope you get lucky with a rep who knows what theyre doing. Some are helpfull but others just read from scripts and dont actually fix anything.

•This is so true! I finally got through last month and the person literally had no idea how to help me. Told me to just wait 2-3 weeks for some specialist to call me back. Still waiting... 🤡

You might try contacting your state representative's office. My cousin was locked out of her account for weeks and her rep's office helped get it fixed. They sometimes have direct lines to the unemployment office staff.

•THIS!!! My state senator's office fixed my claim in 2 days after I struggled for weeks. They have special contacts at the DOL.

•I never thought of this. Anyone know how to find out who my rep is? I'm in Buffalo area.

•Just google "find my ny state representative" and put in your address. They usually have a constituent services section on their website.

OK so listen up, I work at a nonprofit that helps people with unemployment issues (not directly with NYSDOL). Here's what you need to do: 1) DO NOT create a new account as others have mentioned. This will definitely flag your SSN in the system and create a fraud investigation that can take months to resolve. 2) You have a couple options to fix this: - Keep calling the main unemployment number, but be strategic. Monday mornings are absolute hell. Try Wednesday or Thursday afternoons instead. - If you're in the NYC area, visit one of the career centers in person. They can sometimes help with account issues. - Contact your state assemblyperson or senator. Their offices often have direct contacts with NYSDOL staff who can fix these issues. - Try the messaging system on the website (if you can access it at all). - Use a service like claimyr.com to get through the phone system faster. Many of our clients have had success with this. 3) While you're waiting, gather all your previous unemployment documentation - anything with your claim number, previous correspondence, etc. You'll need this when you finally talk to someone. The system is incredibly frustrating right now, but hang in there. Feel free to DM me if you need more specific advice.

•Thank you so much for this detailed info! I'm going to try the state rep route first and see if that helps. If not I might try that claimyr thing.

•This is super helpful info! I'm dealing with a similar situation where my claim got locked after I moved and changed addresses. The state rep suggestion is brilliant - I never would have thought of that. Quick question though - do you know if the career centers can help even if you can't log into your account at all? My situation is a bit different but equally frustrating.

If you still have your claim number or any paperwork from your previous claim that can help a lot when you finally get thru to someone.

I had to use Twitter to get help believe it or not. Try tweeting @NYSLabor with your issue (don't include personal info). Sometimes they respond and help move things along.

The same thing happened to me last year!!! Turns out they had TWO accounts for me somehow and they had to merge them. Definitely don't create a new one, it will just create more problems.

Just wondering - have you tried logging in with your SSN instead of username? Sometimes that bypasses the email verification stuff.

•Yeah I tried that too. Still says no account found which makes no sense.

check if ur local library has an unemployment navigator program. some libraries have staff specifically trained to help with nysdol issues and they sometimes have direct contacts.

Have u reached out to ur previous employer? Sometimes they can help verify ur previous claim or at least provide documentation that might help.

I went through something similar earlier this year - the email issue is such a nightmare with their system! One thing that worked for me was going to my local One-Stop Career Center in person. I brought every piece of paperwork I had from my previous claim (old letters, benefit statements, anything with my claim number on it) and they were able to look me up in their system and help reset my account access. It took about 2 hours but they got me back in same day. Way better than spending weeks on the phone. You can find your nearest location on the NY DOL website under "career centers." Definitely bring your ID, Social Security card, and any old unemployment docs you have. Good luck!
