Can I start a new unemployment claim before my current one runs out?
I'm getting close to the end of my unemployment benefits and I'm worried about what happens next. Does anyone know if I can start a new claim before my current one completely runs out? Or do I have to wait until it's totally finished? I'm trying to plan ahead and avoid any gaps in my income. Any advice would be really appreciated!

From what I know, you gotta wait till your benefit year ends before you can file a new claim. It's usually a year from when you first filed. Check your paperwork or online account to see when that is. Sucks, but that's how it works š¤·āāļø

Ugh, that's what I was afraid of. Thanks for the info tho. Guess I better start looking for work harder š

Not necessarily true. If you worked during your benefit year and earned enough, you might be able to file a new claim. Worth checking with ny unemployment to be sure.

Hey guys, I found a method to get someone on the phone at ny unemployment. I used this site's (claimyr.com) calling tool that dials the phone menu, stays on hold, waits for a live agent to pick up, then sends the call to my phone. It does cost $20, but it works. Here's a video about it: https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE

Sounds sketchy. How do you know it's legit?

I get the skepticism, but I was desperate and it actually worked for me. Saved me hours of frustration. Just sharing what helped me out š¤·āāļø

Can you give more details about how it works? Like, do they just keep calling until they get through?

Yeah, basically it automates the whole calling process. It navigates the menu, waits on hold, and when a real person picks up, it calls your phone. Saved me from going insane with the busy signals lol

I've been in ur shoes, OP. Heres what I learned: You cant start a new claim until ur current benefit year ends. BUT, if u worked during ur claim and made enough $$, u might qualify for a new claim when ur current one runs out. Either way, start applying for jobs NOW. Dont wait till the last minute!

This system is so messed up. They make it impossible to get help when you need it. I've been trying to reach someone at ny unemployment for weeks. It's like they don't want us to get benefits we're entitled to š”

Preach! š It's a full-time job just trying to get through to them. And don't even get me started on the website... š¤¦āāļø

Have you tried calling right when they open? I had luck getting through that way.

Listen up, folks. Here's the deal with NY unemployment claims: ā¢ You can't start a new claim until your benefit year ends. That's typically 52 weeks from when you first filed. ā¢ If you worked during your benefit year and earned at least 10 times your weekly benefit rate, you might be eligible for a new claim when your current one ends. ā¢ If you're nearing the end of your benefits, start job hunting NOW. Don't wait! ā¢ Can't get through on the phone? Try using claimyr.com. It's a service that calls for you and connects you when an agent is available. Costs $20 but saved me hours of frustration. ā¢ Keep certifying weekly, even if your benefits are about to run out. ā¢ Check your online account regularly for updates or messages. Remember, every situation is unique. When in doubt, try to speak with an ny unemployment rep directly. Good luck!

Great info! Quick question - do you know if freelance work counts towards the 10x weekly benefit rate?

Good question! Freelance work can count, but it depends on how it's reported. Best to check with ny unemployment directly to be sure.

I tried it twice. First time they never called. Second time they called at like 7pm when I wasn't expecting it. Missed the call and had to start over š¤¦āāļø

Pro tip: If ur benefits r running out, look into other assistance programs. Food stamps, rental assistance, etc. Don't wait till ur completely broke to start the process. Some of these take time to get approved.

That's a good idea, thanks. I'll start looking into those options too.

Guys, I know it's tough but hang in there. I was in the same boat last year and it felt hopeless. But I finally found a job and things got better. Keep pushing!
