Can I get NY unemployment if I quit to be a stay-at-home parent?
Hey everyone, I'm wondering if quitting my job to be a stay-at-home parent qualifies for unemployment benefits in New York. I had to leave my job because my partner got sick and I needed to take care of our kids. I've been looking for work since then, but no luck so far. Does anyone know if I can still apply for unemployment even though I left my job a few months ago? Any info would be really helpful!

I'm not 100% sure, but I think NY unemployment is pretty strict about voluntary quits. Even for family reasons, it might be tough to qualify. Have you tried calling the unemployment office to ask? They'd know best.

Ugh, I've been trying to call them for days but can never get through. It's so frustrating! š¤

Pro tip: use Claimyr.com to get through to an agent. It costs $20 but saves you hours of waiting. Totally worth it imo

Hey, I found a way to actually get someone on the phone at the unemployment office. I used this site called claimyr.com - it's a calling tool that dials through the phone menu, stays on hold, and then connects you when a live agent picks up. It costs $20, but it worked for me. Here's a video about how it works: https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE

Sounds too good to be true. How does it actually work? Is it legit?

I get the skepticism, but it's legit. They just automate the hold process. Saved me hours of frustration. Check out their reviews if you're unsure.

From what I know, quitting to be a stay-at-home parent isn't usually considered a valid reason for unemployment in NY. But your situation with a sick partner might change things. You should definitely try to speak with someone at the office for a definitive answer.

I was in a similar boat last year. Here's what I learned about NY unemployment: ā¢ Voluntary quits are usually disqualifying, even for family reasons ā¢ There are some exceptions, but they're pretty narrow ā¢ You typically need to have lost your job through no fault of your own ā¢ There's a time limit for filing - I think it's within a few weeks of losing your job ā¢ Being out of work for months before applying might be an issue Your best bet is to speak directly with the unemployment office. They can review your specific case. If you're having trouble reaching them, try using claimyr.com. It costs a bit, but it'll get you through to a real person. Also, keep documenting your job search efforts. That'll be important if you do end up qualifying. Good luck!

Have you looked into other assistance programs? There might be something else that could help your situation even if unemployment doesn't work out.

Check out NY's Office of Temporary and Disability Assistance. They have various programs that might help. Also, local food banks and community orgs can be lifesavers!

Hey OP, just wondering - did you work in NY before? You mentioned VA, so I'm not sure if that affects your eligibility for NY unemployment.

Oh shoot, I should've been clearer. I worked in VA but moved to NY recently. Does that change things?

Yea, that might complicate things. You might need to file with VA instead of NY. Def something to ask about when you talk to an agent.
