Laid off after 5 months - Do I qualify for New York Unemployment?
Hey everyone, I just got laid off from my job. I was employed from January 1st to May 31st this year. I'm worried about qualifying for unemployment because the NY unemployment website says you need to have worked in at least two calendar quarters during your base period. I'm a month short of that second quarter. Does anyone know if I'll still be eligible for benefits? Really need some help figuring this out.

Sorry to hear about your job loss. The two calendar quarter rule can be tricky. Have you worked any other jobs in the past 18 months? That could potentially help you meet the requirement.

Thanks for the reply. No, I haven't had any other jobs recently. This was my first job after graduating college last December. š

Hey there! I actually found a way to get someone on the phone at the unemployment office. I used this site called claimyr.com - it's a calling tool that dials through the phone menu, stays on hold, and then connects you to a live agent when one picks up. It costs $20, but it worked for me. Here's a video about it: https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE

Sounds interesting, but kinda sketchy. Is it legit? How does it actually work?

$20 to talk to someone? That's ridiculous. The system is so broken š¤¦āāļø

I get the skepticism, but it's totally legit. You pay, they call, and when an agent picks up, they forward the call to your phone. Saved me hours of hold time. And yeah, it sucks to pay, but for me it was worth it to finally get answers.

I've heard about this! My cousin used it and said it was a game changer. Might have to try it myself...

I think you might still have a shot at qualifying. The base period isn't just the most recent quarters. They sometimes look at an alternate base period that includes your most recent completed quarter. You should definitely apply and explain your situation. Worst case, they say no, but you might get lucky!

Preach! š I've been trying to get through to them for weeks. It's like they don't want us to get the help we need.

Have you guys tried calling right when they open? I heard that's the best time to get through.

Tried that. No luck. It's always 'high call volume' no matter what time I call. š¤

Listen up, because this is important. Your situation is more common than you might think, and there are a few things you need to know: ā¢ First, don't panic. The two calendar quarter rule is just one part of the eligibility criteria. ā¢ The NY Department of Labor uses different methods to calculate your base period. They'll look at your standard base period (the first 4 of the last 5 completed calendar quarters) AND your alternate base period (the last 4 completed calendar quarters). ā¢ Even if you don't meet the two quarter requirement, you might still qualify based on your total earnings during the base period. ā¢ APPLY ANYWAY. Seriously. Let the DOL make the determination. Don't disqualify yourself. ā¢ When you apply, be honest about your work history. Include ALL work, even if it was part-time or seemed insignificant. ā¢ If you get denied, you have the right to appeal. Many initial denials get overturned on appeal. ā¢ Document everything. Keep copies of all your pay stubs, your layoff notice, and any communication with the unemployment office. Lastly, if you're having trouble getting through to someone at the unemployment office, check out claimyr.com. It's a service that can help you get through the phone maze and talk to a real person. It costs a bit, but it can save you hours of frustration. Don't give up. The system is complicated, but you've got this. šŖ

Have you considered looking for gig work while you sort this out? Could help bridge the gap if unemployment doesn't come through right away.

Uber, DoorDash, TaskRabbit are all pretty easy to get started with. Just be careful with taxes, they don't withhold anything!

I was in a similar boat last year. Applied anyway and got approved. Sometimes the system works in mysterious ways lol. Fingers crossed for you!
