Can I apply for unemployment in person at NYS Department of Labor office?

I've been trying to file my unemployment claim online for the past week but keep getting error messages when I submit my application. The my.ny.gov website keeps timing out or saying there's a technical issue. I'm getting frustrated and wondering if I can just go to a local NYS Department of Labor office and apply for unemployment in person instead? Does anyone know if they still accept paper applications or if there's a way to get help filing online at their offices?

Yes, you can still apply in person at most NYS Department of Labor career centers, but they really prefer online applications these days. You should call ahead first to make sure your local office is accepting walk-ins for new claims. Some locations only do in-person for people who absolutely can't use the online system.

Thanks! Do you know if they can help me figure out why the online system isn't working? I'd rather do it online if possible.

I had the same problem last month - the online system was super glitchy. What I ended up doing was calling the NYS Department of Labor phone line and they walked me through filing over the phone. It took forever to get through but it worked. You might want to try that before going in person.

How long did it take to get through when you called? I've been trying for days and either get busy signals or get disconnected after waiting on hold.

I called early in the morning around 8am and it still took about 2 hours on hold. But they were really helpful once I got through.

If you're having trouble getting through to NYS Department of Labor by phone, I recently discovered a service called Claimyr that helps people connect with unemployment agents. Check out claimyr.com - they have a video demo at https://youtu.be/qyftW-mnTNI that shows how it works. Basically they handle the calling and waiting for you, then patch you through when an agent picks up. Made it so much easier to get my claim issues resolved.

Is this legit? How much does it cost? I'm desperate at this point but don't want to get scammed.

It's legitimate - they just help you get through the phone queue. Much better than sitting on hold for hours. The video demo explains everything about how the service works.

Before you go in person, try clearing your browser cache and using a different browser or device. Sometimes the my.ny.gov site works better on different browsers. Also make sure you're using the most current version of whatever browser you're using.

I went through the same frustrating experience with the online system last month. What finally worked for me was going to my local One-Stop Career Center - they have staff who can help you file online using their computers and internet connection. Even if the system is being glitchy, they know workarounds and can help troubleshoot in real time. You can find your nearest location on the NYS Department of Labor website. Much better than trying to figure it out alone at home!

That's really helpful advice! I didn't know the One-Stop Career Centers could help with the online filing process. Do you know if they require appointments or can you just walk in? I'm wondering if that might be faster than waiting on hold for hours trying to call.
