Had a similar situation last year when my freelance graphic design work disappeared. Took me forever to get through to someone at NYS Department of Labor to ask questions. Finally used this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that actually got me connected to an agent who could explain my options. They have a video demo at https://youtu.be/qyftW-mnTNI that shows how it works. Turns out I did qualify based on some contract work that had been treated as W-2.
Never heard of that service before but might be worth trying since calling NYS Department of Labor directly is impossible these days. How much does it cost?
The system is so confusing!! I never know if I'm supposed to report gross pay or net pay. And what about tips? I work at a restaurant part time and sometimes get cash tips that aren't on my paycheck.
Just want to add that when you file make sure you have all your employment info ready - employer names, addresses, dates of employment, and reason for separation. The NYS Department of Labor will verify everything with your employers so don't guess on dates or details.
ugh the whole system is such a mess. took me forever to figure out how to even apply online and then they made me wait weeks for adjudication. good luck dealing with that bureaucracy
The system is SO broken! 26 weeks isn't enough time to find decent work in this economy. They expect you to take any minimum wage job just to get off benefits. Meanwhile they're making it harder and harder to even qualify in the first place!
Wait, are we talking about regular unemployment or standby? Because standby has different rules. I was on standby for my union job and that was different timing.

The whole system is ridiculous anyway. They tell you to look for work but then the available jobs don't pay enough to live on. Minimum wage in NY might sound decent but when you factor in rent and everything else, you're better off staying on unemployment. It's like they want to force people into poverty wages.

•I understand the frustration, but the goal of unemployment benefits is temporary income replacement while you search for comparable work. The suitable work provisions exist to give you time to find appropriate employment without forcing you into significantly lower-paying positions immediately.

had similar issue when i was on UI couple years ago, ended up taking a part time minimum wage thing just to show i was working but kept looking for better jobs. you can work part time and still collect some benefits i think
