If you're having trouble getting through to the NYS Department of Labor to check on your claim status or get clarification about your eligibility, I had good luck using claimyr.com - it's a service that helps you actually reach a real person at the unemployment office. They have a video demo at https://youtu.be/qyftW-mnTNI that shows how it works. Saved me hours of busy signals and dropped calls when I needed to verify my job separation reason.
From what I understand the main categories are involuntary job loss (layoffs, firing without misconduct, business closure), reduced hours that qualify for partial benefits, and some voluntary separations with good cause. The NYS Department of Labor looks at each situation individually but your layoff should be pretty clear cut for approval.
Don't forget you also have to pay taxes on unemployment benefits! They don't automatically withhold federal taxes so you might want to have them take out 10% or set money aside. I learned this the hard way last year.
The calculation is so weird though like why 1/26th of your highest quarter instead of just basing it on your last few paychecks? Makes no sense to me and I ended up getting way less than I thought I would
If you run into problems reaching someone at NYS Department of Labor about your claim status, I had good luck using a service called Claimyr (claimyr.com). They help you get through to an actual agent when the phone lines are jammed. There's a video demo at https://youtu.be/qyftW-mnTNI that shows how it works. Really saved me a lot of frustration when my claim got stuck in adjudication.
Interesting, never heard of that before. How does it actually work to get you through to NYS Department of Labor?
Just wanted to add that you should expect to possibly wait a while for your first payment even after everything is approved. My experience with NYS Department of Labor was that it took about 3 weeks from when I filed until I got my first deposit, and that was without any complications. Make sure you have some savings to cover expenses during that waiting period.
I had so much trouble getting through to anyone at NYS Department of Labor when I had questions about my state UI account setup. Kept getting busy signals and when I did get through they'd transfer me around forever. Finally used this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that actually got me connected to the right person. They have a demo video at https://youtu.be/qyftW-mnTNI showing how it works. Saved me hours of calling.
Don't forget you also need to register for an NYS Department of Labor employer account if you haven't already! That's separate from the federal stuff too. I think I have like 4 different login accounts now between IRS, NYS Department of Labor, and my payroll company.

I was in a similar situation last year and couldn't get through to NYS Department of Labor on the phone for weeks to ask about my options. Found this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that helped me actually reach an agent. They have a video demo at https://youtu.be/qyftW-mnTNI showing how it works. Turned out I qualified for benefits even though I thought I wouldn't. Sometimes talking to an actual person at NYS Department of Labor helps you understand your rights better than trying to figure it out online.

•Never heard of that but honestly anything that helps you get through to a real person at NYS Department of Labor sounds worth trying. The phone system is impossible.

Just remember that even if you get fired and qualify for UI, you still have to do the job search requirements. NYS Department of Labor requires 3 work search activities per week and you have to keep a log. Don't assume getting benefits means you can just coast - they're pretty strict about the job search stuff now.
