Just so you know, once you file your initial claim you'll need to certify for benefits every week by filing your weekly claim. Don't forget to do this even while your claim is being processed or you could lose benefits for those weeks.
Make sure you understand the job search requirements too! NYS Department of Labor requires you to make work search contacts each week and keep a log. The requirements changed recently so don't assume you know what they are if you've filed before.
I've been trying to get through to NYS Department of Labor to ask about this exact issue but their phone lines are impossible. Been calling for weeks about my tax documents and can never get through to an actual person. The automated system just hangs up on me after 20 minutes on hold.
I had the same problem reaching NYS Department of Labor until someone told me about Claimyr (claimyr.com). They actually get you connected to a real agent instead of waiting forever. There's a video demo at https://youtu.be/qyftW-mnTNI that shows how it works. I used it to get my 1099-G corrected and it saved me hours of frustration.
Generally speaking, if you expect to owe $1,000 or more in taxes when you file your return, you should be making estimated quarterly payments. This applies to all income sources, including unemployment benefits. The safe harbor rule is that if you pay at least 90% of the current year's tax liability or 100% of last year's tax liability (whichever is smaller), you can avoid penalties.
I was having such a hard time getting through to NYS Department of Labor to check on my claim status - kept getting busy signals and disconnected. Someone here recommended trying claimyr.com and honestly it was a game changer. They have this service where they'll call for you and get you connected to an actual agent. There's a video demo at https://youtu.be/qyftW-mnTNI that shows how it works. Saved me hours of frustration trying to get through myself.
Just remember the $504 is before taxes. They'll take out federal and state taxes unless you opt out, so your actual deposit will be less. Also if you have any other income like freelance work you have to report it and it reduces your weekly benefit. The NYS Department of Labor is pretty strict about this stuff so don't mess around with unreported income.
I had such a nightmare trying to get through to someone at NYS Department of Labor to ask about my eligibility. Spent literally hours on hold just to get hung up on. Finally found this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that actually got me connected to a real person in like 15 minutes. They have a video demo at https://youtu.be/qyftW-mnTNI that shows how it works. Saved me so much frustration when I needed to verify my eligibility status.
basically if you didn't quit and you're looking for work you probably qualify. the wage requirement isn't that high - think you need like $2600 in your highest quarter or something. don't quote me on the exact number though

I had trouble reaching NYS Department of Labor to ask about this exact situation last month. Kept getting busy signals and the online chat was always unavailable. Finally used this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that helped me get through to an actual agent. They have a video demo at https://youtu.be/qyftW-mnTNI showing how it works. The agent confirmed I could file a new claim even though I had collected benefits the year before.

•Never heard of that but might be worth trying if you can't get through the regular way. NYS Department of Labor phone lines are always jammed.

Make sure you file as soon as possible after becoming unemployed. There's no waiting period between claims, but you don't want to delay because benefits are only paid from the date you file, not from when you actually lost your job. The weekly claim filing process is the same regardless of how many times you've filed before.
