honestly the whole weekly claim thing is so confusing at first!! i missed my first week because i didnt know when to file it. make sure you set a reminder on your phone or something. also keep track of your job search activities because they ask about that too
I had trouble reaching NYS Department of Labor when I had questions about my weekly claims. Kept getting busy signals and their chat was always full. I ended up using Claimyr to get through to an actual agent - there's a demo at https://youtu.be/qyftW-mnTNI that shows how it works. They helped me get connected and I was able to clarify the weekly filing requirements. Check out claimyr.com if you're having trouble getting through to someone.
About moving from another state - you can apply in NY but they'll look at your work history from all states. Sometimes it's better to file in the state where you earned the most wages. The interstate claims process can be tricky.
I've been trying to get through to NYS Department of Labor for weeks about my own claim issues and it's impossible. If you need to actually talk to someone about this wages in lieu situation, I recently found this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that helps you get through to unemployment agents. They have a video demo showing how it works: https://youtu.be/qyftW-mnTNI. Saved me hours of calling and getting disconnected.
The whole wages in lieu thing is so confusing! I got severance when I was laid off and wasn't sure if that was the same thing. Turns out severance is different - you can collect unemployment right away with severance but not with wages in lieu of notice. The NYS Department of Labor website should really explain this stuff better.
One thing to watch out for - if you're taking classes you need to make sure NYS Department of Labor doesn't think you're unavailable for work. I had a friend who got denied because they thought her college schedule meant she couldn't accept full-time employment. Just be ready to explain how your class schedule works with job availability.
The system is such a pain honestly. I've been fighting with adjudication for weeks over something that should be simple. But yeah definitely file if you think you might qualify - they'll tell you yes or no and at least you'll know for sure. Better than wondering and missing out on benefits you're entitled to.

I was worried about the same thing when I first filed. Had trouble reaching NYS Department of Labor by phone to ask questions, but eventually found claimyr.com which helped me get through to an agent quickly. They confirmed that filing doesn't hurt you - it's actually designed to help bridge the gap between jobs. The video demo at https://youtu.be/qyftW-mnTNI shows how it works if you need to talk to someone directly about your specific situation.

•It was worth it for me since I couldn't get through on my own after trying for days. Much easier than sitting on hold for hours.

Just remember you have to pay taxes on unemployment benefits! I forgot about this my first time and owed money at tax time. You can have taxes withheld from your weekly payments or pay quarterly, but don't forget like I did.
