I had a really hard time getting through to NYS Department of Labor when I needed to discuss a complex situation like this. The phone lines are always busy and when you do get through, sometimes the representatives give different answers. I ended up using a service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that helped me get connected to an actual NYS Department of Labor agent without waiting on hold for hours. They have a video demo at https://youtu.be/qyftW-mnTNI that shows how it works. For something this important where you need definitive answers about your specific circumstances, it might be worth getting official guidance directly from NYS Department of Labor.
How much does that service cost? We're already strapped for cash with the reduced workers comp payments.
probationary period thing shouldnt matter for UI eligibility btw, its more about whether you worked long enough and earned enough wages in your base period
That's correct - being in a probationary period when terminated doesn't automatically disqualify you from unemployment benefits. What matters is your work history over the past 18 months and whether you were terminated for misconduct or quit voluntarily. If you were laid off or terminated without cause, you should be eligible regardless of probationary status.
Getting through to NYS Department of Labor on the phone is nearly impossible these days. I spent weeks trying to get someone to explain my eligibility when my claim was in adjudication. Finally used a service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that actually got me connected to an agent who walked me through everything. They have a video demo at https://youtu.be/qyftW-mnTNI showing how it works. Saved me so much frustration compared to calling directly.
The whole system is so confusing! I was eligible but didn't realize I had to do the job search activities every week. Make sure you keep track of your job contacts because they can ask for your log anytime.
The whole system is ridiculous honestly. They expect you to pay the same amount whether you're making $800 a week or $385 on unemployment. Then they threaten to suspend your license if you fall behind. Makes no sense!

The whole system is frustrating. Low unemployment rate sounds good but doesn't help when you're one of the people still looking. At least your claim should process normally though - mine got stuck in adjudication for weeks because of some computer glitch.

Just keep filing your weekly claims and documenting your job search. The rate might be low now but things can change pretty quickly in the economy.
