Just wanted to add that even if EB isn't available, you might want to look into other programs. Sometimes there are state-specific assistance programs or you might be eligible to file a new claim if you worked enough since your original claim started. The job search requirements stay the same though - you still need to do your three job contacts per week.
Wait, you can file a NEW claim even if you're already on unemployment? I thought you could only have one at a time.
dont forget you have to certify that you're able and available to work each week when you file your weekly claim. they ask questions about whether you worked, turned down any job offers, or had any other income
Tell your cousin to make sure she has all her employment records when she files. Pay stubs, any written warnings, emails about the safety complaints, etc. The more documentation she has the better her case will be if the employer tries to claim it was misconduct.
I had a similar issue reaching someone at NYS Department of Labor about my claim status. Tried calling for days and kept getting disconnected. A friend told me about this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that actually gets you connected to a real person at the unemployment office. I was skeptical but watched their demo video (https://youtu.be/qyftW-mnTNI) and decided to try it. Got through to an agent in like 15 minutes and resolved my adjudication issue that had been pending for weeks.
Check the NYS Department of Labor website for office hours and closures. They usually post notices about holidays and closures but sometimes it's buried in the news section. For your weekly claim, you should be able to file online even during holidays as long as the system isn't down for maintenance.

Wait, I thought unemployment wasn't taxable? That's so unfair, we're already struggling and then they tax us on the help we get??

•I understand the frustration, but unemployment has always been taxable income federally. Some states don't tax it though. The idea is that it's replacing your regular wages, which would have been taxed anyway.

Been dealing with taxes on my UI benefits for years unfortunately. The good news is if you had the standard withholding and your income was low, you'll probably get most of it back. I usually get about 80% of what they withheld returned to me.
