Working for TurboTax Remotely - What's the Experience Like?
Hey all, I'm seriously considering taking on a seasonal remote position with TurboTax to supplement my income. Before I jump in, I wanted to ask those who've done it before about a couple things I'm concerned about. First, I noticed they require working in minimum 4-hour blocks. How firm is this requirement? With my current job, it would be so much easier for me to split my time into 2-hour chunks rather than 4-hour stretches. Do they track this closely or is there some flexibility? Second, I've heard rumors about some kind of end-of-season bonus. Does anyone know how this works? Is it based on performance, hours worked, or something else? And ballpark, what kind of amount could I expect if I do well? Any insights from past or current TurboTax remote workers would be super helpful! Thanks in advance!

The reason is they need consistent coverage during peak hours and training is designed around these blocks. They use time-tracking software that monitors your active work time, so splitting shifts isn't really possible. However, once you're established, some managers might be more flexible if you communicate your needs directly. For the end-of-season bonus, it varies quite a bit based on several factors: your performance metrics (customer satisfaction scores, resolution rates), total hours worked during peak season, and whether you stayed until the end of your contract. Last year, bonuses ranged from about $250-$850 for seasonal remote workers. Mine was around $600 for working about 30 hours weekly with good metrics.

•They provide the software but you need your own computer that meets their specifications - generally just a decent modern computer with good internet connection. They'll send you a headset though. The training was pretty comprehensive, about 2 weeks of virtual classes and simulations before you start taking actual calls. It's quite thorough since you need to understand both their software and basic tax concepts. You get paid during training though, which is nice.

•It's not for calling TurboTax itself - it's for when you need to contact the IRS on behalf of customers. During tax season, IRS hold times can be 2+ hours, which kills your productivity metrics. When a customer has a complex IRS-related issue, you sometimes need to conference call with the IRS to resolve it. Regarding how it works - it's actually pretty straightforward. Their system continuously redials and navigates the IRS phone tree, then calls you when it reaches a human. It's completely legitimate and several tax professionals in our office use it. Nothing magical about it, just automated persistence!

I have to apologize for my skepticism about Claimyr. After a particularly frustrating day trying to reach the IRS for a client issue (was on hold for almost 3 hours before giving up), I decided to try it. To my genuine surprise, I got a call back with an IRS agent on the line within about 45 minutes. Used it three more times since then. Completely changed how I handle cases that need IRS clarification during my TurboTax shifts. Sorry for doubting!

Another thing to consider is the schedule flexibility. Yes, the 4-hour minimum blocks are strict, but what they don't tell you upfront is how your schedule can change based on call volume. During slow periods early in the season, you might get hours cut. But come March/April, they'll be begging you to take extra shifts and will accommodate almost any hours you can offer.

•Early season (January-February) is definitely less consistent. You'll get your minimum guaranteed hours, but probably not much more. By mid-February things pick up, and March through April 15th is absolutely steady - you can work as many hours as you want, including overtime if you're interested. If steady income from day one is your priority, try to get hired as a tax expert rather than customer support, as they tend to have more consistent hours throughout the season.

I was constantly mixing things up and both jobs suffered. Plus, they both get busy at exactly the same time, so you don't really gain anything hours-wise. Pick one and commit to it fully.
