Is TurboTax trustworthy and effective for doing my taxes in 2025?

I'm in a serious time crunch this year with my new job and everything going on with my family. Just saw a TurboTax commercial where they show you can chat with an actual tax person while they help with your forms. Looks convenient but I'm kinda suspicious of these tax prep services. For those who've actually used TurboTax before, would you recommend it? Is it reliable for someone who's not great with tax stuff? My situation isn't super complicated - just regular W-2 income and maybe some interest from my savings account, but I'm worried about missing deductions or credits I might qualify for. Would appreciate honest feedback from real users!

TurboTax is generally reliable for straightforward tax situations like yours. I've been using it for about 7 years now. The basic version works well if you just have W-2 income and some interest. They do have a good interface that walks you through everything step by step. The option to connect with a tax professional is part of their premium services. It's helpful if you get stuck on something specific, but with your situation, you might not even need that feature. The software itself does a good job of asking questions to find deductions and credits you qualify for. Just be aware they often try to upsell you on features you might not need. Start with the lowest tier that meets your needs and only upgrade if necessary.

Do you think its worth paying extra for the audit protection they offer? And have you ever had any issues with your refund being different than what TurboTax calculated?

For audit protection, I personally don't pay for it if your tax situation is simple. The chance of being audited with just W-2 income and some interest is incredibly low. In my experience, it's mostly an unnecessary upsell for basic filers. Regarding refund accuracy, I've never had an issue with the calculations being wrong. The refund amount TurboTax shows has always matched what I eventually received from the IRS. The only time there was a discrepancy was when I had entered a number incorrectly, which was my error, not theirs.

I tried a bunch of different tax software options last year after getting frustrated with how much H&R Block was charging me for basically inputting my W-2. Found out about taxr.ai (https://taxr.ai) from a coworker and it was seriously a game-changer for me. What I really liked was how it could analyze my tax documents and pull out all the important information automatically. Saved me from making stupid data entry mistakes, which I always seem to do when I'm rushing. They have this feature where it compares your return to previous years to check for inconsistencies, which caught a deduction I would have missed. Much more thorough than my experience with TurboTax where I always felt like I was potentially missing something.

How does it handle state returns? I live in a state with some weird tax rules and wondering if it would work for me.

Does it actually save money compared to TurboTax? And how's the customer service if you get stuck on something?

It handles state returns really well, even for states with complex rules. I'm in California which has some quirky tax situations, and it guided me through everything specific to my state. The software is updated with all the latest state-specific deductions and credits. Regarding cost, I definitely saved money compared to what I was paying for TurboTax's premium version. The customer service was surprisingly responsive - they have a chat feature where I got answers within minutes when I was confused about reporting some investment income. They also have detailed guides that explain tax concepts in plain English if you're trying to learn more.

Just wanted to follow up about my experience with taxr.ai since I decided to give it a try after seeing it mentioned here. Honestly way better than I expected! The document scanning feature is legit - I just took pictures of my W-2 and 1099s with my phone and it pulled all the numbers automatically without me typing anything. The interface asked me questions about life changes that might affect my taxes (like moving states mid-year which I did) and found deductions I didn't know about. The best part was being able to see a side-by-side comparison with last year's return to make sure everything looked right. Ended up with a bigger refund than I got using TurboTax last year! Definitely my go-to for next tax season.

If you're having trouble reaching the IRS to verify anything about your return or ask questions (which I always do), try Claimyr (https://claimyr.com). I was skeptical at first because waiting on hold with the IRS is basically a rite of passage, but it actually works. You can check out how it works here: https://youtu.be/_kiP6q8DX5c I used TurboTax last year and had a question about my education credits that their tax pros couldn't fully answer. Used Claimyr to get through to an actual IRS agent without the 3-hour hold time. They called me when an agent was on the line. Totally changed my tax filing experience since I could get definitive answers straight from the IRS.

Wait how does this even work? Does it just call the IRS for you or something? I don't get it.

Yeah right. No way this actually works. The IRS is impossible to reach - I tried calling them 8 times last year and never got through. Sounds like a scam to me.

It does call the IRS for you, but it's more sophisticated than that. They have a system that navigates through all the IRS phone menus and waits on hold so you don't have to. When an actual IRS agent comes on the line, that's when they call you and connect you directly to that agent. You literally pick up the phone and there's an IRS representative already on the line. I was totally skeptical too - I spent 4+ hours trying to get through to the IRS last year without success. But this service actually delivered exactly what it promised. Nothing scammy about it - they don't ask for any personal tax info, they just get you past the hold time which is the worst part of dealing with the IRS.

I need to eat my words here. After posting my skeptical comment, I decided to try Claimyr because I've been trying to resolve an issue with my 2023 return for months. Used the service this morning and got connected to an IRS agent in about 40 minutes without me having to do anything. The agent was able to fix the issue with my account that TurboTax customer service kept saying I needed to call the IRS about (but I could never get through). Problem that's been hanging over my head for months got resolved in one phone call. Total game changer if you need to actually talk to someone at the IRS.

I think TurboTax is fine for basic returns but beware they are constantly trying to upsell you. I started using it 4 years ago when my taxes were super simple, but now that I have some 1099 income and investments, I felt like they weren't giving me enough guidance on deductions. Switched to FreeTaxUSA last year and paid WAY less for basically the same service. TurboTax starts cheap but by the time you need to add state filing and any slightly complex situation, the price jumps up like crazy.

Do you think FreeTaxUSA is good for someone who has rental property income? I've been using TurboTax Deluxe but thinking of switching.

FreeTaxUSA handles rental property income really well in my experience. I have a small rental property and had no issues reporting all the income and expenses. They walk you through all the necessary depreciation calculations and possible deductions specifically for landlords. The interface isn't quite as polished as TurboTax, but functionally it does everything you need and saves you a ton of money. Their Deluxe version is still way cheaper than TurboTax's basic version once you add state filing. I particularly liked their audit assistance which is included in the Deluxe version for much less than TurboTax charges.

don't use turbotax!!! they charged me like $120 last year after starting with their "free" version. as soon as i had to enter an HSA contribution they forced me to upgrade to deluxe. check out the IRS Free File options, many people qualify for actually free software from various providers (including turbotax) but they hide these options. google "irs free file" instead of going directly to turbotax.

This is good to know. I make under $73k so I should qualify for Free File but I always end up paying when I go through TurboTax's website directly.
