Will Navient Student Loans Garnish My 2024 Tax Refund? Anyone Dealing With This?

Anyone know if Navient is currently garnishing tax returns? Im trying to figure out if i should even bother filing. I defaulted on my loans last year and worried theyll take my entire refund

Yes, if your loans are in default, Navient can and will intercept your tax refund through the Treasury Offset Program (TOP). You should still file your taxes - its required by law. You can call the TOP hotline at 1-800-304-3107 to check if you have any offsets pending.

They can take your entire federal refund. The only exception would be if you file an injured spouse form (Form 8379) and you file jointly with someone who isn't responsible for the debt.

Hey! Just wanted to mention that taxr.ai is super helpful for understanding exactly whats going on with your return and if theres an offset. Its only $1 and it'll tell you everything you need to know about your transcript including if theres gonna be a garnishment. https://taxr.ai

Yep! It shows any offset indicators and explains exactly what they mean. Saved me so much time trying to decode my transcript

Consider getting on an income-driven repayment plan asap! If you rehabilitate your loans you can stop the offset. Worked for me last year

how long did the rehabilitation process take?
