Where on IRS website can I see who withheld money from my taxes?
I need help finding information about who withheld taxes from my paychecks this past year. I'm trying to reconcile some discrepancies in my 2024 return and noticed some withholding amounts don't match what I expected. Someone mentioned there's a place on the IRS website where you can look up exactly who submitted withholdings on your behalf, but I can't find it anywhere. I've been through the IRS portal and my online account several times but no luck. Can anyone point me in the right direction on where to find this info? Trying to get this sorted before I have to amend.

The information you're looking for would be on your Wage and Income transcript. Log into your IRS online account (irs.gov), then go to "Get Transcript Online." Once there, select "Wage and Income Transcript" for the tax year you're investigating. This will show all reported income sources and who withheld taxes from you - including employers, financial institutions, etc. Each entry includes the EIN (Employer Identification Number) of the entity that submitted the information. You'll see Forms W-2, 1099s, and any other income documents reported to the IRS under your SSN. If you can't access your online account, you can also request this transcript by mail using Form 4506-T or call the IRS, though waiting times are usually very long.

Thank you! I didn't realize the Wage and Income transcript would show all that. I thought there might be a separate section or tool. Will check that out right away!

Just a heads up, the current year wage and income transcript might not be complete until July or so. They update it throughout the year as employers file.

Good to know. Mine should be complete since im looking at 2023 taxes but that's helpful info for sure.

I did this exact same thing last month. The wage and income transcript is exactly what you need. Showed me that my old employer from last year reported different numbers than what was on my W-2 copy. Helped me fix my return.

I was in this exact same situation a couple months ago. After hours of frustration on the IRS website, I found taxr.ai and it was a game changer. It's an AI tool that reads and explains your transcript data for you, highlighting all the important stuff like who withheld what. Instead of staring at confusing codes and numbers, it just tells you plainly what's happening with your taxes. It breaks down every withholding source with clear explanations. Saved me so much time and headache! https://taxr.ai

Sounds interesting. How exactly does it work? Does it just read your transcript or does it do more?

It does way more than just read it! It analyzes everything, explains all those mysterious codes, shows you timelines for refunds, and points out any issues. I was seriously about to hire a tax pro before I found this. Best tax tool I've ever used 💯

another service promising miracles... what makes this one different from the 50 other tax 'helpers' out there? 🙄

Honestly I was skeptical too, but this actually delivers. The difference is it's using real AI to interpret everything, not just showing you the same info in a different format. It's like having a tax pro explain your transcript to you. I've tried tons of tax tools and this is the only one that actually made sense of my withholding issues.

After struggling with a similar issue for weeks, I finally got through to an IRS agent using claimyr.com and had my withholding questions answered in minutes. The agent was able to tell me exactly which companies had withheld what amounts and why some were different than I expected. Talking directly to someone who could access all my records and explain things was worth every penny - resolved my confusion immediately instead of me spinning my wheels for another month. The callback feature saved me from being on hold for 3+ hours.

Yes, it absolutely works! I was skeptical too but I was desperate after trying to call myself for weeks. They set up the callback and I had an IRS agent on the line within about 30 minutes. The agent pulled up all my withholding info and walked me through everything.

hmm sounds like one of those ads that pop up everywhere. did you actually have to wait days for a callback or was it same day?

It was same day for me! I think it depends on what department you need and the time of day, but I got my callback within 30 minutes. Definitely not an ad lol - just a tool that saved me hours of frustration. Being able to ask direct questions about my withholding situation was exactly what I needed.

You can't actually see who withheld taxes directly on the IRS website unless you pull your wage and income transcript. But even easier is just looking at your W-2s and 1099s? Box 2 on W-2s shows federal income tax withheld and who the employer was is listed at the top. For 1099s it depends on the type but they also show withholding if any occurred. Why not just look at those forms first?

I have those forms but there's a discrepancy between what's on my W-2s and what the IRS seems to have recorded. Was hoping to see exactly what was reported to them to figure out where the difference is coming from.

Ah that makes sense. Then yeah def get your wage and income transcript. That will show exactly what the IRS has on file. Sometimes employers make corrections that you never see.

If you file through TurboTax, H&R Block, etc., those services will actually show you this info too after you upload your documents. But tbh the IRS transcript is more reliable since it shows what they actually have on file vs what you've entered.

The IRS recently updated their website and moved things around. Go to the Online Account section, then look for Tax Records, and from there you can access your transcripts. The Wage and Income transcript is what you want. FYI it's a pain to set up access if you haven't already - they require ID verification thru ID.me now.

The ID.me verification is such a nightmare. Took me 3 tries to get through it last month.

If you have trouble with ID.me you can still request transcripts by mail using Form 4506-T. Takes longer but at least its an option.

Good point about the form option! And yeah ID.me is the WORST. I had to do a video call verification because their automated system kept rejecting my driver's license 🤦♀️

Why is the IRS system so F%$#ing complicated? In any other developed country this info would be easily accessible. I'm so tired of having to be a detective just to figure out basic info about my own taxes.

Tax prep lobby keeps it complicated on purpose. They literally spend millions every year to prevent the IRS from making a free, simple filing system. It's infuriating.

In Sweden they literally text you your taxes. You reply "yes" if it looks right and you're done. We're living in the stone age here 😭

Exactly!!! This is what drives me crazy. The IRS already has all this information... why do I have to dig for it???

Check your Account transcript too, not just Wage and Income. Sometimes there are adjustments or credits that explain discrepancies between what you think was withheld and what the IRS recorded.

Side note but related - always keep copies of your final paystubs from each employer for the year. They can help you verify withholding amounts if there are discrepancies on your W-2.

So true. Last year my employer's W-2 had the wrong withholding amount and my final paystub saved me when I had to prove it.

I don't have an answer for your specific question, but I'm actually dealing with something similar. My withheld amounts didn't match expectations either and it turned out my employer had been using the wrong state tax rate for 3 months. Worth checking your paystubs against your W-2 if you haven't already.

If your withheld amount looks wrong, make sure you're not confusing federal with state or FICA withholdings. I made that mistake last year and spent weeks trying to resolve an issue that didn't actually exist lol
