What's the process to file my 2021 tax return if I completely missed filing it?

So I never got around to filing my taxes for the 2021 tax year. During that period I was collecting unemployment benefits and honestly just got overwhelmed with everything. Now I'm trying to figure out how to file taxes from that year but I'm totally lost... it asks for stuff like my annual income which I have no clue about anymore. I tried to just put 0 but the system wouldn't accept it. The main reason I want to file now is because I never received any of those stimulus checks that were going out since I didn't file my taxes. I really need to know how to handle this situation. I did manage to file my 2023 taxes through Cash App and it was super easy since I'm working now and it basically did everything automatically. Is there any similar app that can help me file my old 2021 taxes? Or should I just bite the bullet and go see a tax professional? And where the heck would I even find my old income information at this point? Sorry for being so clueless about all this tax stuff!

You can absolutely still file your 2021 tax return! This is called filing a "prior year return" and many people need to do this each year. For your 2021 unemployment income, you should have received a Form 1099-G that shows how much you received and any taxes that were withheld. Check your email or mail from that time, or contact your state unemployment office to request a new copy. They can usually provide this online or mail you another one. If you received any other income in 2021, you'd need those documents too (W-2 forms from employers, 1099s for contract work, etc). If you lost these, you can request a Wage and Income Transcript from the IRS website which shows all income reported to them under your SSN. Unfortunately, most tax apps don't support prior year returns for free. You have three main options: 1) Purchase prior year tax software, 2) Use Free File Fillable Forms (though this is complex), or 3) Visit a tax professional who can handle prior year returns.

Would they still get the stimulus money from 2021 by filing now? I thought there was a deadline for claiming those payments?

Yes, they can still claim the Recovery Rebate Credit for any stimulus payments they missed, but there is a deadline. For the 2021 tax year, you have until April 15, 2025 to file and claim any stimulus money you were eligible for but didn't receive. After that date, you'll no longer be able to claim those funds. The IRS generally allows you to claim tax refunds for up to three years after the original due date, so the same timeline applies to any regular refund you might be owed as well.

I went through something super similar last year with my 2020 return! I found out about taxr.ai (https://taxr.ai) after struggling to track down all my docs. You upload whatever tax docs you can find, and they use AI to analyze them and tell you exactly what's missing. They even found a 1099-G from unemployment I didn't remember getting. The site helped me pull everything together for my missing return and made it way easier than trying to remember everything from years ago. You don't need to remember your annual income - they help locate the right documents from that tax year and can even get your tax transcripts directly from the IRS.

How does this actually work with unemployment forms though? Like can they get access to my 1099-G from 2021 if I don't have it anymore? My state's unemployment website won't let me login anymore.

Sounds kinda sketchy tbh. How are they getting IRS transcripts? Don't you need to verify your identity directly with the IRS for that? I tried getting mine and it was a huge hassle.

They walk you through how to request your 1099-G from your state's unemployment office if you don't have it. In my case, they provided direct links and instructions for my state, which saved me tons of time figuring out the process. Some states let you access old forms online, others require you to call or email a request. For tax transcripts, they guide you through getting your own IRS transcripts through the official IRS channels. You're right that identity verification is needed - they show you exactly how to complete that process with the IRS, but you maintain control of your personal information. The service just organizes everything and shows you what you're missing and what to do next.

I was really skeptical about taxr.ai at first (as you can probably tell from my comment), but I decided to give it a try since I was also missing my 2021 return. I'm actually shocked at how helpful it was. The system found my unemployment income that I completely forgot about and helped me track down a 1099 from a side gig I did briefly. What I found most helpful was how it explained exactly what forms I needed for my situation and where to get them. Saved me from paying like $200+ to H&R Block just to file a past return. I was able to finally claim my missing stimulus payment too. If you're still working on that 2021 return, it's definitely worth checking out.

If you're having trouble getting through to the unemployment office for your 1099-G, I've used Claimyr (https://claimyr.com) to actually get someone on the phone. I was on hold for HOURS trying to reach my state's unemployment office and getting nowhere until I found them. They have this system that navigates the phone menus and waits on hold for you, then calls you when a real person picks up. You can see how it works here: https://youtu.be/_kiP6q8DX5c Was a game changer for me when I needed to request my old unemployment tax forms for a prior year return. The unemployment office is seriously impossible to reach otherwise.

How long does the whole process take? I've been trying to call my state's unemployment office for days and literally can't get a human on the line.

Hold up... you're paying someone to wait on hold for you? That seems ridiculous. Why not just put your phone on speaker and do something else while waiting?

The whole process depends on how backed up your state's office is, but in my experience it cut hours of wait time down to minutes. Instead of being stuck with your phone on hold, they handle the waiting and only connect you when there's actually a human ready to talk. I totally get why it might sound ridiculous at first, but when you've tried calling multiple times and spent hours on hold (or worse, gotten disconnected after waiting forever), the value becomes obvious. Plus, you don't have to stay glued to your phone worrying about missing the call when someone finally picks up. I was able to go about my day and just got a notification when they had an agent ready to talk to me.

I take back what I said about Claimyr. After trying for literally TWO MORE DAYS to reach my state unemployment office and either getting disconnected or told to call back later, I gave in and tried it. Got connected to an actual person in about 40 minutes while I was at work. The agent was able to resend my old 1099-G forms to my email address on file so I could complete my missing tax return. Would have taken me another week of frustration without this. Sometimes it's worth paying for sanity.

Just wanted to add - if you're filing a 2021 return now, remember that there were some special tax rules for unemployment that year. The first $10,200 of unemployment benefits was tax-free for many people (depending on your income level). Make sure whatever method you use to file takes this into account or you might overpay!

Wait really? I filed my 2021 taxes late last year and I don't think that unemployment exclusion was applied. Can I still amend my return to get that money back?

0 coins

You can definitely still amend your 2021 return to claim the unemployment compensation exclusion if you qualify! You'll need to file Form 1040-X (Amended Return). You generally have 3 years from the original due date to file an amendment, so for 2021 taxes, you have until April 15, 2025. Keep in mind that the exclusion only applies if your modified AGI was less than $150,000. If you qualify, it's absolutely worth doing since it could mean a significant refund depending on how much unemployment you received in 2021.

Honestly just go to a tax pro for this. I tried doing a prior year return myself and messed it up, then had to pay penalties. A pro who does this all the time will make sure you get all the right credits and don't miss anything. Plus they know all the COVID-related tax stuff for 2021.

Any idea how much a tax professional typically charges for a prior year return? I need to file 2021 too but I'm worried about the cost.
