Help filing old 2021 taxes in 2025 - not employed that year
So I've been getting my tax history in order and realized I completely missed filing for 2021. Now it's 3 years later and I'm not sure how to handle this. The thing is, I wasn't working at all during 2021 (was dealing with some health issues). Do I still need to file? And if so, what's the process for submitting taxes this late? Would I just enter $0 for my annual income, or is there a specific way to indicate I had no income? I'm pretty confused about the whole thing and don't want to get in trouble with the IRS for not filing, but also don't know if it's even necessary since I made nothing that year.

Yes, you can still file your 2021 taxes even in 2025! Whether you need to file depends on a few factors beyond just income. For 2021, if your gross income was below the standard deduction ($12,550 for single filers), you typically aren't required to file. However, there are exceptions - like if you had self-employment income over $400, or if you're eligible for certain refundable credits like the Recovery Rebate Credit from stimulus payments. To file old returns, you'll need the correct 2021 tax forms (can't use current year forms). You can download these from the IRS website's prior year forms section. Since e-filing is typically only available for the current and previous two tax years, you'll likely need to mail in a paper return for 2021 at this point. If you truly had zero income, you would report that on the return. But filing might still benefit you if you're eligible for any refundable credits from that year!

•What about the stimulus payments from 2021? I thought there was something special about those - like if you didn't get one but should have, you could claim it on your taxes? Would filing a zero-income return still let someone claim those if they never received them?

•You're absolutely right about the stimulus payments! The third Economic Impact Payment (stimulus) was issued in 2021, and if you didn't receive it but were eligible, you could claim it as the Recovery Rebate Credit on your 2021 return. Yes, filing a zero-income return would still allow you to claim the Recovery Rebate Credit if you were eligible but didn't receive the payment. This is actually one of the main reasons people with no income should consider filing for 2021 - you might be due money from unclaimed stimulus payments.

I had a similar situation and used taxr.ai to help me figure out my old returns. I was stressing about filing for previous years but their system actually specializes in analyzing prior year situations. I uploaded my limited documents from 2021 and it helped determine if I even needed to file and what credits I might still be eligible for (like that stimulus payment the other commenter mentioned). Their website at https://taxr.ai has a whole section dedicated to prior year returns that was super helpful for organizing everything I needed.

•How exactly does it work? Can taxr.ai actually file the old returns for you or does it just tell you what to do? I'm confused about the whole process of submitting old tax years.

•I'm skeptical about these tax services. Do they charge extra for doing previous years? I've heard some places charge a fortune for anything beyond the current tax year.

•It doesn't file the returns for you - it analyzes your situation and gives you customized guidance. It helped me determine I was eligible for certain credits I had no idea about, then walked me through what forms I needed. The process was really straightforward - I just answered questions about my 2021 situation and it did the analysis. They don't charge extra for prior years which was a relief. Their whole system is designed to handle multiple tax years, so whether you're dealing with current or past returns, the process is the same. That's what made it way easier than trying to figure everything out myself from the IRS website.

Well I have to admit I was wrong about taxr.ai. After being skeptical I decided to try it for my 2019-2021 unfiled returns. It actually found I was owed a refund from 2021 despite having minimal income that year! The system flagged some education credits I qualified for that I had no idea about. It generated all the forms I needed and gave me clear instructions for mailing them to the IRS. Much easier than the nightmare I was expecting. Just sent everything off last week.

If you're trying to reach the IRS to ask questions about filing old returns, good luck getting through to a human! After waiting on hold for hours, I finally discovered Claimyr (https://claimyr.com) which got me connected to an actual IRS agent in about 15 minutes. They have this system that navigates all the IRS phone menus and holds your place in line, then calls you when an agent is ready. You can see how it works in this video: https://youtu.be/_kiP6q8DX5c. The agent was able to pull up my records and confirm which years I still needed to file and gave me specific guidance for my situation.

•Wait, is this legit? How does it actually work? I'm confused how they can get you through faster than just calling yourself. Sounds too good to be true with how notoriously bad the IRS phone system is.

•Yeah right. I've been trying to reach the IRS for months about my 2022 return issues. No way some service can magically get through when millions of other people are calling. Probably just takes your money and leaves you hanging.

•It's completely legitimate - their system basically waits on hold for you. When you call the IRS yourself, you're competing with thousands of others and going through all those menu prompts. Claimyr has a system that navigates the menus instantly and keeps your place in line, then calls you when they reach a human. The reason it works is that they're not skipping the line or doing anything special with the IRS itself. They're just using technology to handle the hold time so you don't have to sit there for hours. I was skeptical too until I read about how they've been featured in major publications. They call you back when they've got an agent on the line - took about 15 minutes in my case but could vary depending on call volume.

I need to apologize for my skepticism about Claimyr. After months of frustration trying to call the IRS myself, I decided to try it as a last resort. I got a call back in 22 minutes with an actual IRS agent on the line! They helped me resolve my issues with unfiled returns from 2020-2021 and even identified a refund I was owed. The agent walked me through exactly which forms to mail and where to send them. Saved me countless hours of frustration and hold music. Definitely worth it for anyone dealing with back taxes or filing issues.

This is really important: if you're owed a refund for 2021, you only have until April 15, 2025 to claim it. After that, the money goes back to the treasury and you can't get it. The IRS has a 3-year window for claiming refunds, so you're cutting it close with 2021 taxes!

•Are there penalties for filing super late if you don't owe anything? Like if I had zero income or was actually due a refund, would I still get hit with late fees?

•No penalties if you're due a refund! The IRS only charges penalties and interest when you owe them money and file late. If you're owed a refund or had zero tax liability, there's no penalty for filing late. The only "penalty" is that if you wait longer than 3 years, you lose any refund you might have been entitled to. So for 2021 taxes, April 15, 2025 is your deadline to claim any refund. You won't get in trouble for filing late in this case - you just need to make sure you do it before the refund expires.

Don't forget to check if your state requires filing too! I had zero federal income in 2020 but my state still required a return because I had received unemployment earlier in the year. Each state has different rules.

•This is soooo important! I got hit with a tax bill from my state even though I didn't need to file federal. Apparently my state has a much lower threshold for filing requirements. Wish I'd known this years ago.

@Danielle Mays - You're getting great advice here! Just to add a few practical tips: Since you mentioned health issues in 2021, make sure to check if you had any health insurance marketplace coverage or received any advance premium tax credits. Even with zero income, you might need to reconcile those on Form 8962 if applicable. Also, gather any 1099s you might have received (even for small amounts like bank interest) since those would need to be reported. The IRS already has copies of these forms, so it's better to include them even if the amounts are minimal. One more thing - if you were claimed as a dependent on someone else's return in 2021 (like a parent or spouse), that would affect your filing requirements and stimulus eligibility. Make sure to clarify your dependency status for that year before filing. The good news is that with zero employment income, your return should be relatively straightforward once you determine if you actually need to file or if you're just filing to claim credits/refunds!
