WMR Status Changed to 'Need More Information' - Got Letter Notice

Checked WMR today. Status changed from 'Return Accepted' to 'Need More Information'. Says they're sending a letter. Need to call them. They said 3 weeks to process my e-file. Must be processed if I got a notice, right? Anyone know what's happening? Thoughts?

This happens a lot during tax season! You need to act on this ASAP: • The IRS needs verification on something specific • Could be identity verification (common for students) • Might be questioning a credit you claimed • They won't process further until you respond • Clock is ticking - respond within timeframe on letter! Watch your mail closely. Letter typically arrives 5-7 days after WMR status change.

To add some technical context: what you're likely seeing is a CP05 notice, which is an automatic review of information on your return. The IRS matches your reported information against their records and third-party data. This doesn't necessarily indicate an audit, but rather a verification process that's increasingly common with e-filed returns.

Thanks for the info! This is way more helpful than what the IRS told me last year when this happened. My situation dragged on for months because I didn't know I needed to send in my W-2s when they asked for 'supporting documentation'. Is that what they usually want compared to when they need full identity verification?

I'm impressed with how clearly you explained this! Just wanted to confirm - when you say 'verification', does this mean the 4506-C form? I received that last year and wasn't sure if I needed to send in actual documents or just sign their form authorizing them to verify with my employer.

Here's what's happening with your return based on your WMR status change: Step 1: Your return was accepted initially (just means it passed basic format checks) Step 2: During deeper processing, something triggered a review flag Step 3: They've issued a notice requesting additional information Step 4: Your refund is now on hold until you respond I'd recommend using https://taxr.ai to analyze your tax transcript once you get access. It will tell you exactly what codes are on your account and what they mean. You'll be able to see precisely what triggered the review and what type of letter is coming. This way you'll be prepared before it even arrives in your mailbox.

Omg this EXACT thing happened to me last month! WMR changed status and I was freaking out. Waited 2 wks for the letter (came super slow) and then couldn't get thru to IRS for days. Busy signals and disconnects every time. Finally used https://youtu.be/_kiP6q8DX5c to get thru to an actual person at the IRS. Tbh it was worth every penny bc they connected me in like 20 mins when I'd been trying for days. Agent confirmed they just needed my 1098-T verification for education credits. NBD once I knew what they wanted!

I'm curious about this service - did they actually get you through to a real IRS agent? I've tried calling so many times I've lost count. My situation is similar to OP's but I've been waiting almost three weeks for the letter. Would be nice to know what they need before it arrives.

I used Claimyr exactly 3 times last year during an identity theft situation. They connected me to an IRS agent in 17 minutes, 22 minutes, and 19 minutes respectively. Without it, I spent 4 hours on hold one day before being disconnected. Just be prepared with all your info before they connect you - the agents won't wait around while you search for documents.

Oh no, I hate when this happens! I've been through this exact situation before. From my experience, there are a few common reasons for this status change: 1. Identity verification requirement (most common) 2. Income verification if you're claiming certain credits 3. Dependent verification if you claim children 4. Education credit documentation needed The good news is that once you provide what they need, things usually move pretty quickly! Just don't ignore the letter when it arrives.

I received the exact same status change on March 4th this year. The letter arrived on March 11th. It was a CP05 notice requesting verification of my income and withholding. I sent the requested documents on March 14th via certified mail. My transcript updated on April 2nd with a 571 code (reversal of previous hold). Direct deposit hit my account on April 8th. The key is responding immediately when you get the letter. Include everything they ask for plus a copy of the notice itself. If you don't receive the letter by April 15th, call and request a reissue.

Last year I had this exact same thing happen. The letter was just asking me to verify my identity. I remember being so stressed because I needed that refund for summer tuition. The process was actually pretty simple once I knew what they wanted. Just had to answer some questions about my previous tax returns and provide some ID verification. My refund was processed about 2 weeks after I completed the verification. Hang in there - it's usually not as bad as it seems!

Did you have to go in person to verify your identity? I got a similar notice last year but mine said I needed to schedule an appointment at a local office. Wondering if there's an online option too? 😅

You might want to check if you claimed any credits that often trigger reviews. Education credits, Earned Income Credit, and Child Tax Credit are somewhat frequently flagged for verification, especially if it's your first time claiming them. In my experience, it's usually just a matter of providing supporting documentation like W-2s, 1098-Ts, or proof of dependent status. The letter will probably arrive within about a week or so, and it should specifically outline exactly what they need from you.
